Green algae on the glass - A couple of questions....

[The algae that grows on the glass that you use your magnet to remove what type is it? And why does it grow fast?

Will cleaning the skimmer slow the growth? Or reduce feeding?

:glare:]

[I have reduced my lighting to actinics 10hrs and halides to 8hrs 2 weeks ago. The reduction didn't slow the growth rate at all. I have to clean the glass everyday and it's a good solid coat over the glass. Is this just normal?]

[Do you have a fuge with macro? I have heard of a lot of people losing the green algae on the glass after adding a fuge ???]

[Turbo snails are also a good, natural way to help get rid of the algae.

I have this problem, too - though maybe not to the extent that you have - and it's due to the high phosphate level of my source water. (Even after the RO/DI)

I also use the PhosGuard pellets in a nylon bag, and that helps, too. You can't leave it there on a continuos basis if you have coral, so I do a one week on, one week off.]

[I have a couple turbo snails and they do help, but there is just to much area to cover. I checked my phospates this morning and it was in the .5 range. Is this high?]

[.03 or less phosphate is ideal.

You mght want to get more snails. I've heard you should have one snail per gallon, which sounds like too many, but my 280g has a lot of snails... Well over 100 Ceriths and Turbos.]

[Just think of it as a phytoplankton culturing station. Most people set up external phytoplankton stations but you have yours in the tank. Everytime you wipe down the glass your feeding your tank live phytoplankton.]

[Well said bulldogger
My tank has to have the magnet every 3 days, and my trates are 0 and my phosphates on red sea kit are 0.1.
Although it is considered as labor-- I like to think of it as good labor due to the phytoplankton given to the tank when I am cleaning the glass.]

[I have also heard that running the magnet over the green algae on the glass is like dosing the tank with phyto. I kind of like that idea. It' not hard to get off with the magnet if it's not left on to long and allowed to get to thick.
Maybe someone out there can chime in and give us a good lesson in weather or not it is true that the algae is like dosing with phyto.]

[Good Ole Bulldogger. The Voice of wisdom :)

Glad to here that I do the same as others! My corals seem to respond to the glass scrapping as well. Mine needs it after about 3-4 days also Cappy. Its not a hassle at all since Im always peering in the tank and I want a clear view!]

[Yeah I don't see it as labor either, but you would be suprised at how many due. I am the same way my tank is always and I will say ALWAYS clear viewing.
My LFS says I am a clean FREAK, I even help him out every once in awhile do his

He's a good friend, and a great person to boot!]
