Great problem to have

I was helping a friend clean out and move a bunch of stuff from his rental house that a tennant had skated out on.

I came across a 6' long tank with a canopy (about 125 gal, I wanna say the dims are 60" x 20" x 24" lxwxh), a 40-ish gallon sump w/fuge(with all plumbing), and an additional 30-40 gallon tank (will be a QT or HT).

This is a two-parter from here:

For one, if I were to set this up for a true reef aquarium, what size MH's would I need and what type of power heads, and I need skimmer suggestions. I only want 2 powerheads if possible or three max (is that feasible?). And for lighting I would prefer to use the lumenarc reflectors.

Second question: I want to have a tang or two and would like to hear suggestions about what tangs would be best for this setup. I already have a couple false percs and a YCG....

Thank you in advance for your help!

if you go l3 minis you will need three of them if you go with big L3 you can go with two of them to cover the whole tank...250 watts mh is what i would go with

if you went two power heads i would go with maxi jet mods or two vortecs on opposite ends

Hi,
I would suggest putting a couple of inches of water in there....let is sit a few day's, then test for copper before ya get too carried away.

Cheers!

Kuyatwo:

Thank you, I was curious about the wattage. Didn't know if 400 would be overkill, two 250's sounds good. Do you prefer vortech over tunze?

Bimmerz:

The tank was used as a reef setup (going by books, food, misc equip), not really worried about copper, but I will test for it. I didn't think about that until you brought it up, that would have been a pain to set it all up and not even have a chance for success.

thank you both for your responses.

i myself would go 250...i perfer vortech over tunze especially with the new wireless driver coming out next week...but some controllers can control tunzes if you think later on you want to add a controller....

if you decide before friday i am going to order some a lumenarc reflector and a bulb from reefexotics.com...if you want we can go in and split shipping

I wont be ready in time, sorry. I'll be moving within the next few months and am not sure if I'll have to room for it when I get back into an apt.

Thank you though

Tested it last night, no copper. WHEW! Bimmerz (Ron), you had me worried about that all day yesterday

No leaks still, its been full for about 36 hours now (with a powerhead to keep it moving around in there) I am emptying it out tonight.

The sump is also water tight, as is the other tank (but this 30-40 gallon tank did test positive for copper). Everything looks like it'll work so far.

I'm still trying to decide if this large tank will be feasible in a one-bedroom apartment. It'll fit fine in the house I'm renting now, but I'm going back to an apt. in a couple months.

thank you both for your help so far, and BlueTort (evan) for his help as well.

EDIT: I posted this tank and the QT in the buy/trade forum to gauge interest on a trade. I am looking for a 60 gal bowfront or 75 w/stand and canopy.

I am not sure if this is even a proper trade or not. I dont want to rip anyone off, but I feel that a 125 gallon w/canopy is a fair deal for a 60gal bowfront with stand canopy. I go by the honor system so if this is outlandish let me know please. The last thing I want to do is seem snakey.
