Fundraiser for dfwmas - Dfwmas calendar

[A thought just crossed my mind that I thought may interest some of you. With the many nice tanks in the DFW area and the advent of digital photography, how about developing a DFWMAS calendar for 2004 (and beyond), which can feature pics of unusual salt water animal activity in various tanks. We can elect a committee to select the picture of the month (12 pics total along with a cover photo) and then take the pics to a printer (maybe a business who would be gracious enough to cut us a break) to print the calendar. This project can accomplish a number of things such as:

1. feature some potentially beautiful pictures involving the hobby

2. educate others about the hobby (newbies and vets)

We could sell the calendars ourselves, have them placed in the various pet stores or bookstores to sell, and have the proceeds donated to the Dallas Aquarium or even do something like use the proceeds to adopt a school or something and set up a system there for kids to view every day.

There are many options here that can make this a great project. Any thoughts?]

[Could we use shots from tank of the month... Or are those the property of the tank's owner's...would they release the rights to them?]

[Usually, pictures are the property of the photographer and permission would need to be granted to use them in the aspect in which you are speaking. Some photographers may say we can use it, but only if they can put their logo or info at the bottom of the picture. Which I think should be done so that they can get their name out, especially if photography is their living. I've seen several of Travis' photos and he has a very tasteful way of attaching his name to them that does not detract from the photo itself. As a matter of fact, you may get some local reef photographers very interested in helping get these photos if they are given the opportunity to put their information on each photo of theirs that is used (at least their name on the photo in a corner with a copyright and then their contact information in the back of the calendar). Just a thought....

Ivan -- someone is going to ask you, "So, are you heading this project up?" Being that the BOD does tons of other stuff for the club, I'm sure they would be more than happy to do something like this as long as you are willing to take the reigns and lead up the project, however, you will have to ask one of them personally.]

[Couldn't have said it better if I tried. I really like the idea, if you want to pursue it, please drop Brad, Barry, Marc or myself a PM.]

[Believe me, I knew I would be the one to head this one up once I made the suggestion  . I guess I need to develop a "business plan" for starters, but I would like to solicit the help of others who would like to assist. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?]

[Both Travis and Marc are taking excellent pics of tanks. As a photographer, I know copyright laws are tricky at best!
Just an idea - take pics of store tanks, too - get some sponsorship, or a page just for them.]

[I do custom calenders in my AD-Specialty business. Will be glad to work on this Fundraiser. This is in no way an ad for my business. If I need to edit how I send this info that is fine. Just don't want the thread locked because I responded.]

Glenn,

Having carefully reviewed the commercial post policy, and after surveying all the BOD, having a secret vote, and in fact consulting several attonrneys on the matter, it seems your post is ok. :p :cool grin:

Just kidding! :wwww:

It never ceases to amaze me what a talented bunch of club members we have. With just the relevent experience discussed here, I know you guys could come up with an an awesome calendar.

Again, when someone is ready to move forward, please drop me or one of the other BOD a PM! :cool grin:]

[Um Glen, I thought you liked them strip-searches? :p

All joking aside, I think this is a great Idea. My tanks too yellow for most of peoples taste, but if needed its ready to volunteer.]

[Y' know, instead of sending a PM to all of you, it may be best if we met in person and talked. In addition, with the holidays coming up and our schedules getting a little hectic before the year closes out, perhaps a calendar for '05 would be a better idea. This way, we can strategize and set up a timeline for the entire year. We could secure vendors to sell them, a photographer who could copyright them (maybe volunteering the services), and then working with Glenn on formatting and printing the finished product. Finally, we can figure out what to do with the anticipated funds.

For those of you who want to get involved, maybe we can meet in a pet store or something after hours to hash out the specifics. Does anyone know of a store we can meet in? Please send me a PM noting your interest. I'm thinking the Sunday after Thanksgiving would be a good day to meet before everything gets too crazy. Let me know your thoughts.

Finally, if it's at all possible, I will also look into meeting via teleconference for the initial session, since all we would be doing is setting up a strategy. I'll let you know if we can meet that way; this will allow folks from the entire Metroplex to get involved.

I think my Type-A personality is on overdrive now . . . :smart:]

[I think even if it is bad we should proceed and get it to LFS and club sells this year it's great advertisement!]

[There really is no reason it has to be from January to December. It could be from July 04 to June 05, for example, giving us a good solid 6 months to get this done. I'll be happy to help with some pictures if others like them, but I definitely bow to Travis' amazing abilities.

Something tells me he could also offer the calendar services, so with Glenn and his sources, this shouldn't be too hard to bring to fruition.]

[Glenn by the way the strip search thing was one of the funniest things I've ever read!

Hey maybe we could give the calander so comical quotes like from the web!]

[I'd be more than happy to do something like this! Perhaps I could do 6 and Marc could do 6.

As far as a calendar resource, I was really glad to see Glenn pop up on the thread because calendars can be VERY expensive to do well in short runs.

As far as copyright laws, it's standard procedure for me to get a property release before I turn the camera on. Then, I would own all images and give permission for their use on the calendar.

Also... kitty brought up a great idea about using LFS and advertising them in the photo.

Travis]

[Following up on your thoughts Travis, are you suggesting you and I take a number of pictures at the LFS, then find the one shot that is amazing, put their store name in the corner and let that be the picture of the month?

There are a number of LFS in DFW. Without intentional thought, some may still feel left out for a number of reasons. We could still put the photo credit and location under the picture, but I feel that if the store was highlighted so to speak, it would smack of advertising.

After all, you know they ALL want to be on OUR calendar. :laugh long:

I'm definitely in, but I'm glad we are talking these things through.]

[I dunno, I'm not sure the calendar should consist of only LFS images.

I think our members have some amazing tanks that deserve to be highlighted and - oh yeah- I'm itching to photograph.

As for "smacking of advertising", perhaps... but it is a fundraiser.

Personally, I just want to take some great pics of great tanks and let people enjoy them on their walls. The rest is details to me. :)]

[To throw out a slightly different view, I feel like the pictures should be 100% derived from our member's tanks. First, it makes the calendars more personal for the club, and second it distances us from the LFS favoritism issue. We have a number of stores that are very supportive of us, and we sure wouldn't want to make any one of them feel unimportant.

The way to involve the stores, imo, is to have them sponsor a month or to sell ad space to them inside the calendar, should they be interested in participating. In this way, they get to choose the extent to which they support the project, if at all.

A project such as this, done well, could have a market outside of our local area. In fact, I'd think it could be marketed to the the ReefKeeping communty as a whole.

I'm against us rushing something just to get it out there. My personal feeling is that it should be done right, or not at all. JMO.]
