Fuge question

This is my first attempt at using a refugium and I'm very nervous about the return side running dry or the whole thing overflowing. It has been running all day but what scares me is that in the return side the water level fluctuates by about two inches at any time.I can look at the water and it be alittle low then comeback five minutes later and it be a couple
inches higher. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

i think thats ungood.

how is it plumbed?

your pump should push a steady amount of water, unless it is partially clogged or something.

do you have enough drain from the main tank to the fuge?

mine used to do this too. you have to have a small hole in the tip top of your drain tube from your dispaly so it can take in air.

you dont have to take anything apart to drill it if you can get to it with a drill just drill it. the shavings will be minimal and are completely harmless. mine has a 1/8th inch hole because my tiny hole kept clogging up with salt creep and it was a pain to clean because i had to remove my canopy and lights to get to it.

OMG! im sooooo sorry i didnt realize you werent reef ready. i wish i had answered that sooner  FAIL that is deffinately my bad!

We have Mac users as well. But to attach a picture isn't hard. Did you watch the second video?

Click "Upload attachment" (located under the window you type each reply in), then find the file on your harddrive, Click "Add" and then "Submit". It's pretty much that simple.

ok here are some pics something just isnt right

Your problem appears to be that you are siphoning water out of your tank. You need to either get an overflow box, or drill the tank. I would not let that continue to run until it is fixed.

well i put that on the drain because it makes so i can start a siphon easy . i think the problem is my pump with the drain fully open the pump will not keep up

like they said, you need an overflow box or a weir.

we dont have a siphon to the fuge / sump area. it is gravity fed.

there is only a siphon in the overflow box portion.

What I did was I studied all the pages at melevs reef, posted a couple of posts here, then built my own.

I used 2 lees specemin containers and some pvc pipe to construct mine.

Small specemin box for inner, and large specemin box for outer.

the overflow box is constructed such that only a minimal amount of your main tank can drain into it at a given time.

The overflow box is built in 3 sections - the inner box, outer box, and u tube.

the inner box hangs inside your tank, just below the full water line.

the outer box hangs outside your tank, and hangs deeper than the inner box, because it is the large specemin container and is built deeper.

the u tube will create siphon between the inner and outer boxes.

Then from the outer box, you have a gravity fed pvc drain down to your sump.

Your return pump can run as fast as your overflow box can drain.

go big on the drain size. 1/2" drain was ungood. 1" is OK for a 300gph pond pump from lowes, but barely. 2" drain and i could have moved some water volume.

but you have to study the design.

im leaving out important details.

go study that ^^ post there ^^.

i actually have my 1st one i built laying right here if you want/need it. it is 1/2" drain and would be good for 55gal or less tank.

its not pretty, but it works.

id trade a rock or a snail or a hermit crab or something for it.
