Found something interesting

Wondering what you guys think. Planning on drilling my tank for an over flow and while looking online for an overflow box i came across this. http://www.customaquariums.com/c-2-h2overflow.aspx ....seems like a pretty neat design and wont take up any room. they also have a nice return line set up as well. What is yall's opinion on this? Seems like a good design can be moved out of the way of lights has a high gph so not to worried about flooding it.

That is awesome. Wish I had seen this for my old DAS 115g, drilled at the back. Also is a great idea for frag tanks. I'd go for it if I were you, then you have only a small PVC elbow showing, not a huge overflow box. Good find.

had a customer buy one of these, had to get a replacement because the first one was assemble poorly but they were really great with their customer service. Yes noisy and no real way to help it that we can figure out.

You could add a T on the back side of the tank. Add a small length pipe with a cap on top. If you wanted to tune the air going down, you could fill the hole with a valve, should make it quiet enough. That is, if it's too noisy for you, it may not be.

Picture is much better than my drawn out explanation; it's the 2nd picture in the OP, third pipe from the left.

you can't really simulate a durso style since the overflow box is exposed upright and not submerged under the surface for silencing. however putting a gate valve on the drain could help with noise but you would still need to simulate a bean animal style drain for safety.

In your opinions is it worth giving it a shot or would you got with a different over flow style? Wanted to drill out my 55 and put one in. still debating on the style i want to use. Any suggestions you guys have would be helpful.

This just saw that no one had replied to this, so I thought I'd throw out my suggestion: If you haven't drilled the tank yet then look into the Reef Savvy Ghost overflow (or one of the knock off versions of that, which is what I have). It lets you run a Beananimal setup for the overflow (http://www.beananimal.com/projects/silent-and-fail-safe-aquarium-overflow-system.aspx) which is quiet and has multiple failsafes. The overflow in the link uses a full coast to coast setup on the back wall, but the Ghost overflow uses a small box inside the tank which flows through two bulkheads to a larger box behind the tank where the down pipes are. It also takes up very little room in the tank and flows a ton of water.
