Gordi stopped eating on the Tuesday (11th) and stopped being active. I saw him on top of the large rock I have the day before which had several colonies of hydroids and thought he may have been stung. (Thursday night I took the rock out and chisled them all off) Up till then he was extremely active, eating pellets and some of the other foods I fed him 3-4 times daily. Plus, the tank is still crawling with pods, isopods, gammarus shrimp and he was actively hunting & eating.

Here's the previously noted link of him eating a pellet (after having tried several)

Here's a video taken of him active and eating taken September 9 at 2:34 p.m.

Here's a video taken on the 12th at 11:02 a.m., the second day of his inactivity:

I puchased him August 16th, so he got sick only 3 weeks after having him. The day he was sick I checked all params to make sure everything was okay. 0 across the board for Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite, Phosphate. Ph low around 7.8, high 8.06 (New to using B-ionic and still trying to get the dosage right) but Calcium & alk okay although on the lower end of the acceptable range. So I'm at a total loss as to what happened to him.

Oh no! That's terrible news... Especially since you seemed to have the perfect specimen in your tank (eating, not sick, etc). I guess some fish are just like mystery grab bags. Sorry to hear that. I had a Scooter Blenny do that to me many months back. He ate voraciously, scooted for pods, but then just up and died after 2 weeks.

Very sorry to hear about your loss. You really did work hard at providing a great home for him though and I highly doubt anyone could have provided better care.

Sorry for the loss of the little fat one! He seemed to be doing so well...but you never know about what you can't see.

My male mandarin passed away about a month after getting him a mate. He followed her around, ate (pods and mysis) and the day before I found him, they were even doing "the spawning dance". Then the next day, found him recently deceased (nothing else had gotten to him yet).

I at least had him for nearly 3 years - which is pretty long.

Sorry for your loss, most likely is sounds like he did have some kind of issue it was probably just internal. I seriously doubt it was from the hydroids unless they were extremely large. Sorry again for your loss!
