Flow questions

Good afternoon.....I have a delema!, is Mag 12 or 1200 gph too much flow for a 55 gal? I know there is gonna be some flow loss onthe way up to the tank. the sump consists of 30 long sump and finally does anyone have any ideas on a return flow set up?....Any coments, considerations and confusions will be greatly appreciated. :?

well i have 4 powerheads on each corner of the tank . i have the two in the back facing down and towards the middle of the tank. they are both rated at 300 gph and i have a huge power head on the right corner i think it is rated at 400 gph not sure pointg straight across the tank and a mag 12 pointin right in the middle and as faras i can see i dont think i have any dead spots

Thats awsome.....Im setting up...a pvc flow system that spans the width of my tank and five inches on the sides....if you send me your email address Ill email you the drawing im working off of.

You might post the drawing here.

To use a Mag 12 on a 55g as your return pump, you may have microbubble issues. Typically, the flow going through the sump should only be 3x to 5x the volume of the display. That would be less than 300gph.

I ran a Mag 9.5 as my return for the 55g reef, and had to dial it back to avoid overflowing the aquarium.

If you need lots of flow in the display, use the Mag 12 for a closed loop, and a smaller Mag for your return pump.

Thats awsome....I had it backwards...I was thinking that the flow was supposed to stronger going through the sump.....sould the the flow inthe sump be around the the output of a mag seven or a five...take a look @ this..Im sending you an email....tell me what you think.

I'll take a look. For now, please go down the hallway, third doorway on your right. Look for the room with the sign Sumpology 101 on the door.

:)

Agree with Mark. Use like a Mag 5 for your return then use the 12 on a closed loop. You could have a killer setup with that!

The mag 5 will only puts out 310 gph.....That wouldnt be enough flow @ 4'....The mag 7 puts out 480 @ 4'.....Is there some way to slow the flow of a HOB overflow rated @ 600 gph or is there a 500 some where?....

Its maximum draining capability is 600gph. Anything less will flow out perfectly.

However, if it is very slow, air bubble can get trapped in the U tube of a HOB overflow box. You do need enough flow to flush those right through. The Mag 5 is just fine.
