Flow/powerhead question

I have a 150 marineland tank, 48 x 30 x 24. My question is how much water flow do I need? I have a mp40w, a aqueon powerhead rated at 950gph and a mag 9.5 return pump. I have sps, montis and zoas...do I need more flow, if so what would you guys suggest, another mp40w and ditch the aqueon?

One is fine 2 is great and more the better for more random flow but maybe put a couple 10s on the back wall.

Sent from pay phone in the airport.

Your SPS would love two mp40s on opposite ends of the tank in sync/anti sync mode. You could always keep the aqueon in there if you wanted and mount it in a back corner angled slightly upward to provide increased surface agitation/better oxygenation. But if you did decide to go with 2 mp40s you definitely wouldn't need it and your tank would be more aesthetically pleasing without it IMO.

mp40w and aqueon are no where near each other in price or performance. If price is not an issue yes I would get another. Also IMO your return pump is not flow. It's simply to get water out of sump. In other words don't get a bigger return pump just to add flow to the tank.

Just had the aqueon laying around and figured it's better in the tank then laying in a bucket somewhere. In this hobby, money can't be an issue if you want it done right! I will look around for another mp40w and ditch the aqueon pump

Okay, so my 2nd mp40w is suppose to be here shortly. Where is good placement for them? I plan on taking the aqueon out and putting it in my salt mixing can. Also, should I run them in sync or anti sync?

For your demensions I would say one on each side pointing at each other. Flow is up to you. IMO it's best to change it up to create random flow. Look into an apex controller (more money) if you want to get an automated way to create random flow. Plus control everything else on your set up.

I agree, opposite ends of the tank pointing towards each other. Height of them relative to the substrate is something you'll just have to play with until you find your sweet spot. Anti sync would be a good setting to get a wave action going in your tank. Many people like reef crest mode, but that's one of the modes that won't allow anti sync. But ss95003 is correct, if you get an apex controller you will have MUCH more controllability.

So I set them up about 6" from the top facing each other and set the short pulse mode for a small wave effect...liking the flow I'm getting now...fish are definitely enjoying it as well, swimming back and forth. I have looked at an Apex but I've gotta give my bank account a break for a bit [smilie=rofl.gif]

Now onto the red cyano battle!
