First Nano ... need input

I just got my new 8gal JBJ Nano Cube and it came with a bag full of little tubes with holes that are tan in color. Are they some type of Bio balls. What are they and what good are they and should I keep them in the refu ? Thanks guys..

thay are ceramic rings . put them in the chamber next to the spung.thay give alot of serfice area for good algy to grow but after your tank has cycled thay will gum up and thay will need to be removed.you can then replase them or as i did slowly add LRruble and slowlyre move the rings maybe 10 a week. it worked for me. mmy aqapod is doing grate

Leave them out.

They will filter for a while.

Stuff will grow on and inside them (the are porus) that supposedly removes nitrates and ammonia.

Then they get clogged and covered in gunk and cause problems - so you have to remove them a little at a time.

Easier to just leave them out and start the tank with live rock rubble in the filter areas.

Oh, leave the sponge out too or clean it often

I kept the sponge but left out the others in my 24g. I cleaned the sponge weekly or at least evry other week. I did like it because it cought anything large...stay on top of water quality as it can deteriorate quickly in smally tanks. Whatch your bioload and how much you feed. just my thoughts...
