firefish hiding

Mine hid under some rocks for almost a week before they started coming out but even then they never hung out in the water column like I thought they would. They also sleep in the rockwork at night. I think they should be fine but I'm not an expert.

Cheers!

Mine also hid for about a week or so before being more open and outgoing. Now they usually hang out in the same spot, in open view, during the day.

So did mine, they are shy of fast moving big fish, mine was spooked by my sailfin, after about 3 weeks, he started to come out more, now he's out almost all day.

Mine were hid for about a week and then jumped out of the tank. This happened three times, so no more firefish for me.

thats what I was worried about but so far so good. Mine hid for 2 weeks, stupid Coral Beauty kept wrazzem around. Now theyre in the middle most of the time except, when they live up to their name as dart and completely dissappear in a blink of a eye. The kids get a big kick out of that.

good luck with the firefish...

and quick question about one of my fish if you dont mind, but i have a new Christmas wrasse that is doing the same thing as his firefish, mine actually comes out, but only mid afternoon for just a bit to catch afternoon feeding, and then goes and hides until the next day?!@

Firefish really seem to do better in groups, odd numbers best. They're far less shy this way. Very social fish. I have three, Moe, Larry and Shimp. Moe is the big boss of the trio, Larry sticks close by him all the time. Shimp is the runt of the litter, out with the other two during feeding or when lights first come on, but then rushes to hide in the rocks at the least provocation. Mine tend to hover upper mid tank, right below a small opening in the eggcrate for the skimmer outlet. I'm sure it is just a matter of time until there will be a jumper, probably the skittish Shimp. Very cool fish, but other than my Mandarin, these three are the only fish I have that I haven't been able to train to eat meaty foods from an algae clip. They have to have really small stuff in the column. All tank mates are pretty docile: Green Mandarin, Yellow Coris, False Perk, Midas blenny, and a Magenta Dotty (Maggie) with an attitude. All of these guys are about the same size except the Blenny and the Mandy. They all get along swimmingly. Maggie used to chase everybody, however, she seems to have settled down recently, but God help any new additions to that tank. I think I'm fully stocked there maybe a little overstocked, but so far every one's happy.

Do you have any large brittle stars in your tank? Especially the green kind? I put a firefish in a tank with a green brittle, and it hid for weeks until I removed the green brittle. The fish came out the next day and was never shy again.

I agree, the more the merrier (odd numbers)...
I don't have any personally, but a friend has three and they just hang out together on the right side of the tank. He started with 4, but I guess the other three out competed it and established an equilibrium. Good luck, they are beautiful fish!

Sumpdiver, how big is your tank? How is the mandarin doing and has your tank been established long?
I heard dotties can be pretty nasty. But, I have read that the magenta are one of the least aggressive ones. Glad to hear everyone is getting along. I am considering getting one, love the splash of color.

V320: I may hear from the Mandarin Police on this one, because we are breaking all the rules with this guy, and I do not recommend it for others unless they are willing to do all the work required to keep one of these guys in a small tank. Our Green Mandarin is living in a (Sumpless) 50 gallon cube tank. We?ve gone to quite a lot of trouble to keep him fat, including keeping up a separate 20 gallon Macro Grow Out tank just for his pod consumption alone. Although the tank is small and sumpless, it is well established with a DIY HOB fuge stuffed with pod rich macros. The tank has been running now about a year and was started from a well established system. For the last six months we?ve made bi-weekly trips to Fort Worth for Mr. Li?s pod infested carlupa, however I no longer have to do this because my grow out tank now runeth over. It was a lot of trouble for a long time for one little fish, but he has been worth it, and we have finally trained him to eat frozen Mysid.

Julie, I apologies for the hijack, back on topic: I find it interesting that V320 mentions the Filefish hanging to the upper right side of the tank, because this is precisely where mine hang out, and now that I think of it, it is exactly where the group was hanging out in the tank where I got them. They are very interesting to keep and I highly recommend them to anyone keeping gentle fish. My Magenta has never bothered the Firsfish, but she keeps the little Coris hopping. Perhaps because these two are both so brilliantly colored and about the same size and shape, but the Firefish seem to have no enemies whatsoever, well except from Moe keeping the other two in line.

I agree, that is true dedication! But dragonets are definitely worth it!!!

Julie - my apologies on the hi-jack as well... sometimes I get carried away. lol
