Firefish Goby

Hi,

I bought a firefish goby from Petco because they had them on sale for 8.99. So I get it home and let it go in my tank (29G Biocube) and it swims around for about 10 - 15 minutes and then disappears in to the rock and I havent seen it for about three days. It does not even come out at feeding time.

There are two small green chromis and one small clown fish in the tank as well as various softies. I just did a water change yesterday and the water is testing ok for nitrates, nitrites and ammonia but the PH was very low this morning (PH tested good last night before I went to be).

Should I be worried about not seeing the Firefish goby or should I just let it be for a couple more days? I am afraid my clown fish might be pestering it when it tries to come out. The clown was very aggressive toward my scooter blenny when I first put it in but seemed to be ok with it after I gave it (the clown) some food directly after introducing the blenny.

Thanks,
JC

Hi,

How did you acclimate the firefish???? They can be timid at first but you should start seeing it hanging out. Check your overflow/filtration area, it could have gotten back there.

Cheers,

To acclimate the fish I did as it was suggested to me to place the bag in my tank and let it sit 10 - 15 mins and then add 1/4 cup of my water to the bag after the 10 - 15 mins and then let it sit another 10 - 15 mins.

I know it is not in the overflow area. I was afraid I might have lost it to the back of the tank and slow started moving my rocks until I was able to see the fish, this was done yesterday. I just fed them this morning and was not able to see him so I am certain that he is still under the rocks.

I just don't want him to die under there. Should I move the rock and get him out from under the rocks or just let him be for now?

I have one as well, and it can be shy. It will hide in the rocks as well, but it comes out. It may just need time to adjust. Mine can get in the holes in the rocks...places I never thought possible. :)

ok i will let him be for a bit. I did move the rock I knew he was under last night and he was still there and still alive...

And he should be happier with the additional rock I am looking to buy.. I think I am going to try and pick up another 10 lbs in the next day or two.. only have a 29G cube.

Hi,

That was a kind of an abrupt acclimation, hopefully all will be well. Make sure the LR is fully cured before adding it to your tank....you could have a cycle kick off otherwise. You may also want to check out this less drastic acclimation procedure, sounds like someone may have missed a step in there when they told you about it. You want to be sure that not only temp, but salinity and ph are matched as well. Some stores may keep their salinity lower than we keep our tanks at so it may take longer to get these parameters matched. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm?dept_id=&aid=841

I just acquired a firefish goby from a friend and it was doing the same thing. I didn't see it for at least 10 days - and then all of a sudden he's out alot. He's still a very timid fish - perhaps that is their personality? Yours will be a beautiful and interesting addition to your tank once he relaxes! Candace

I am only looking for fully cured rock to put in. I was hoping I would see someone on the forums post some for sale but I havent seen any recently.

I will definately read that link, thanks :)

well the firefish started coming out after I fed them a little tonight but every time he comes out the stupid clown chases him back to the rocks...

From my experience Firefish Gobies like to school. Maybe your guy is just taking longer than usual to get comfortable given that he's the only one in your tank.

Funny about the overflow - I used to have 3 of them, then noticed one day that I only had 2. Several days later, while doing a water change, I found the lost one in my sump. I guess it had jumped into my overflow, then followed the flow through my durso into my sump. Must've been a fun ride! :)

i got some rock i will sale you at 3.00 per and reaquascapeing will get the clown off his back. were you live? hit me with a pm,oh!!! and i have some GSP and some other beginer corals i will give you.

I bought 3 firefish when I first started my 120.

1 jumped to his death within the first week, the other two would just sit in the water column flicking their barb, until I fed the nem and clowns, and then theyd run around and grab the leftovers and just float in the middle of the tank and flick...

I think they all have markedly different personalities.

I have seen them burrow, hide under rocks, and just chill in the middle of the tank.
