Fiji mud or sand in sump?

One of the LFS is very high on using Mud in the sump... I have read a deep sand bed is just as good or better... What is your experience with either or both... And has anyone done both live sand and mud together?

I personally have run miracle mud, sand and substrateless in my fuge. I prefer a bare refuge. Easier to clean. I have only cheato in my fuge now, seems to be just as effective IMO.

A dsb needs to be deep to be effective I can't recall the minimum but I want to say it is 10" so it can denitrate the water properly.

I have seen miracle mud tanks they look good but remember you need to swap out half out every year

What are you trying to accomplish Steve with your tank that makes you want to give one of these a try?

I try to avoid sand and mud in the sump. I like to try and clean my sump out on a regular basis, and that stuff just gets in the way. Im also getting away from DSBs, they become pretty unsightly after a year.

The LFS is convinced that the MUD helps feed the SPS corals and does not require as much dosing, stabilizes the tank. So I started looking into it and doing some research and found many opinions on a deep sand bed, but not any real testimony on the results gained with MUD... the goal is not to reduce any levels of Nitrates, but rather have a consistent source for minerals for the corals in conjunction with dosing... When you read the manufacture claims it sounds too good to be true... But a LFS is swearing by it so I thought I would ask the experts.

I can say my miracle. Mud is working, ive seen a notable difference in skimmer production, which i think in turn helped clear the water of the bacterial bloom i was having. Also its good to have if you want mangroves
