Feeding Corals Help

Is "Feeding Frenzy" a good coral food to use? I've never fed any of my corals except for keeping calcium levels at healthy levels and feeding my bubble anenome silversides. How often should I feed? I would like to promote growth. I have zoas, frogspawn, xenia, trumpets and some sps if that info helps. Thanks for your help.

This is a subject you will see brought up countless times on every forum but here's my input.

1. There is no proof that spot feeding your coral will make them grow faster.

2. There is no proof that it won't make them grow faster lol. I'm with group 2 and spot feed often.

3. If you spot feed, test your water more times then you feed.

4. Best foo I've found for coral is Rod's reef/coral blend.

5. If you spot feed turn off your pumps/heaters/skimmers or anything else that needs the flow to run. Wait tell the water is "dead"

6. Make sure the food/water/live phyto/iodine/trace elements/tequila are about the same temp as your your tank water. You can do this by mixing it all up in something with a lid and floating it until your ready to feed.

7. Let the food separate in your container. Suck in dense chunky food from the bottom for say acans/chalice/dendros and such. Use the top layer of mist like food to feed zoas an palys although some palys will take down bigger food. You want to LIGHTLY layer this stuff on polyps, you only need a little. I will do this about 5 times for each frag/colony. Also use the finer food for montis and plates.

8. The monti and plate corals will take the longest to digest so do them first, put VERY little on them and do not repeat. After your done feeding the other coral check the montis again. You should see a slime sucking all the food into certain polyps. You want to wait as long as you can before kicking your pumps back on since it will blow the slime off and could upset some other coral.

9. This will screw with your skimmer if you feed to much or to often. I build my filtration systems to handle the load and could get away with not adjusting the skimmer.

10. If you have cleaner shrimp spray some food near them or keep them destracted somehow. They will pinch your coral and in some cases (dendros) reach into there gut and pull the food out. I only use sexy shrimp in large amounts as cleaners and they don't bother anyone.

11. You will see an increase in bristle worms and other filter feeders. I don't spot feed sponge or feather dusters but the always seem to grow fast when I'm feeding that tank.

12. Don't take my word. Research and experiment. Be careful and remember that you can't buy into everything someone posts just because they use CAPs and numbers lol.

No I guess when a coral can use photosynthesis to remain alive that is would be hard to prove that feeding them will make them grow faster, however if they are eating then is should be safe to assume that this will aid in growth, if not why would they have the ability to consume food?

Nonetheless I use the following schedule. On night one I mix some coral frenzy and feed the whole tank. The corals with polys do extend to snag what they can. Since most corals eat in the oceans and their polyps are not just for decoration but to catch food, I leave my flow on. Besides my mandarins love it, they swim around with their mouths open to catch what they can. I try to feed close to lights out so some food is still circulating for my chalice (he still won't feed with lights on)The next night I add 20 ml of reef plus. Since I don't dose Styronium, on the third night I dose str. and at times will add a couple drops of logol's iodine. Then a night off, then I start with coral frenzy again. This is just my thing, but seems to be working.

I can tell you from experience spot feeding does grow corals. I started out with three sunny d palys in jan 2012 and prob have had over 200 thats with multiple frags cut. where I dump my food for the fish the under tow current blows them straight to the sunny d's first.

We like to target feed our corals a couple times per month. We use Julian's Thing by Two Little Fishies and Coral Heaven food from Indo Pacific Sea Farms. We will try out some Reef Roids in a couple weeks we picked up at Macna. said:
I ordered Julian's Thing and I read a review where you have to add pvc to it your tank is over 24" deep. Did you have to do this as well? Regardless all reviews said it was best direct feeder out there.

There kinda over priced in my book.
This cost me a few cents.

I'm with you. I have seen better growth when feeding.

Also every chalice I've owned will eat with lights on. Just try the tips above. Turn your flow off, wait for the water to stop moving around and then put a light layer of meaty food on him. You won't see the sweepers come out for more then a second. Just long enough to tack onto some of the food and then suck it down.

Who carries Rod's food locally? Marine Depot wants $24 overnight shipping. said:
One of the LFSs that sponsors the board posted a few days ago about carrying it... I want to say it was Saltwater Paradise?

Matt I was wondering if yall have started feeding the Rods? If so how do you feed it? Also, do you make sure that it is the tank temp before feeding it?

I feed some rods original blend every few days. The rest of the time I feed a mixture of chips, pellets, nori. When I feed rods I take a little chunk and melt it in a cup of tank water. Then I take my turkey baster and give a squirt to each coral. My turkey baster is from Kroger and it comes apart for easy cleaning afterwards. Plus my water is only about 12-13" deep so the turkey baster gets everywhere I need to go.

I never directly feed any corals in the aquarium. The Rods food is nice. Just let the current do the job for you, unless you have corals that need direct feeding. My LPS and SPS are on their own and they do well.
