feather duster (found answer)

I got a new goby about 10 days ago, and stuck him in my reef to clean up the sand. I'm not pointing any blame, but this morning my feather duster's head was off the (tube?) upside down in the sand.

Is it dead? do they shed? what is the right thing to do?

okay... all is well, but maybe the goby need to be returned.

FD's shed their crown usually for two reasons, as a part of their reproduction cycle and when they are harassed/stressed. The crown will grow back with time under ideal conditions.
If it leaves the tube, then that would be a bad sign.

Cheers,

**edit** Scratch the reproductive part...

I had one leave the tube crawl under the rock next to it and build a new
tube and did fine until I did a tank move and he got crushed.

They usually only leave their tube as a last desperate attempt at survival, if it find's favorable conditions elsewhere then they will regenerate their tube...if not they may die. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/aug2002/invert.htm
