Favorite Schooling Fish

Anyone have a favorite for a nice open swimming fish that will school with 4-5 others? I have blue/green chromis in one tank, want something different in the other tank. I haven't had much luck with Anthias but curious on others' preferred schooling fish....

I've seen Blue Reef Damsels (from the carribean) school quite nicely in an aquarium when they are small (under 3"). Once larger they tend to go solo though...

How big is your tank? You can have 4 or 5 Yeloow Tangs, and they'll school if there is something a touch aggressive in the tank (not taht'll really eat them, but scary)

I know you said you have not had good luck with Anthias, but i have had great success with my Lyertail Anthias.

dont know how reef safe the little pnks are, but i have always wanted to do 7 or so domino damsels as they will school together and are an interesting fish that wont break the bank buying so many. saw some on DFS actually sold as a group of 5 with a rose nem as they apparently host it and i think a tank dedicated to that would be awesome looking.

another cool fish is the silver cardinal, sorry, cant remember their exact name. sirricsalot has something like 20 or 30 and they look so cool schooling together. im sure you could get 5 and still get a nice schooling affect.

i too have had a threesome of chromis which have been fun, but in my 210 i plan on doing 5 of the smaller anthias. again, i know you havnt had much luck with them, but there are other types that are not so difficult you could read up and find. great colorful fish.

Thanks for the responses. I might try the lyretail anthias. If it goes badly, I know were SS lives :D The tank is 105 gallons, so I might have a kole tang or small Sailfin, but definitely not more than 1 tang.

I was told at the LFS that the Bangaii would school. I ended up buying one. Another day I was at another LFS and they told me they don't school.. I ended up buying another. I 'm not sure if it's normal for them to school, but mine do swim together a lot.

I love green chromis for schooling fish too.

no Banggais do not school in tanks, juveniles do, but not adults. They school in the wild because of the massive amount of space in the ocean. However, in your fish tank, they would eventually pair off and pick off the rest.
