Fan Wiring

Ok I'm am no electrician nor computer savant......I am wanting to DIY four CPU fans to cool off my lighting on my tank. Instead of re-wiring them I want to use the 2 pin molex connectors. So i bought a simple fan controller for a CPU to control the fan speeds. Question???? How do I power the fan controller??? i dont think using an AC/DC adapter will work and I really didn't want to use a cpu power supply. Can someone with wiring expertise or knowledge help a guy out? Chris

That controller is going to take 12VDC in, at about 1A, and output to the fans via individual potentiometers.

At Radio Shack, you can buy a little Wall-Wart adapter, with like 20 different kinds of ends. It's meant to be a universal power supply if you lost your wall-wart for your cordless phone, game boy, etc.

(yes, I said Game-Boy)

Anyway, usually they are switchable from 5v, 6.6,v, 9v, 12v, etc. You wanna set it to 12V, try to get one close to 1A, or 1000mA output.

Just look around the house, all you need is an old power adapter that outputs 12VDC. They'll say on the sticker, and they'll state whether the pin is + or the sleeve is.

Cut the connector off, and strip the wires.

Your +12V goes to the yellow wire of the fan controller, and the common or (-) goes to one or both of the blacks. (usually, fans only use the red (5V) or the yellow (12V)

Hope this helps.
