Expecting again...

[Looks like my Bangaii's are expecting again. I've been feeding them like crazy since the last meeting (which was one week after they had their last fry) and it looks like he's carrying again. I had the fortune to see them in the classic mating dance last night...pretty cool.

Four of the six previous fry are still thriving in my refugium...a healthy one disappeared for no reason. The second disapperance was somewhat expected, as the little one just didn't swim quite "right"...Darwinism at work, I guess. Still, I was sad to see that "Skippy" didn't make it despite his fight (and he did fight for every meal, every swim, etc.)

I hope that my pair has finally figured out the whole breeding thing after a couple of years...then there will be local tank-raised bangaii for all! :wwww:]

[How many do you have to mate. Are you willing to part with any of the fry I would love to take a shot at breeding!!!!]

[I started with my original pair two years ago...this October was the first time he actually carried them to term (he's carried several times over the past two years).

I have one or possibly two fry that will be available (at least 2, maybe 3 spoken for already) for sale (mainly to recoup the cost of buying BBS kits to feed them for the past month). Still figuring that out, but the most likely scenario for getting a pair would be to get one from me and another young one from another source to insure a good gene pool.

More on that later!]

[ohhhhh.... I am just setting mine up. I was told you can not feed baby brine shrimp to clownfish. They have some sort of sharp pointy spot and it destroys the intestinal track? You have to feed baby rotifers instead. I assumed that was the same for all fish... But I guess not?]

[Nick...Oh goodness no!!! I'll let my bangaii have that honor in my house!

Brian...Bangaii fry are a lot bigger than little clowns so they can handle the BBS. They "come out" pretty much ready to survive on their own (in the wild at least). At a month old, mine are maybe a little over a 1/2-inch long (hard to get them to sit still for a measurement).]

[Not arguing, but I have never heard of the sharp pointy thing on baby brine. Usually the reason for using rotifers is because they are smaller than baby brine and smaller fry can get them into their mouths.]

[Brian,
Just to follow up on the BBS feeding to clownfish. As Terry pointed the reason for feeding baby clownfish rotifers is that baby brine are too large for the newly hatched clowns to eat. I feed my False Percula babies, rotifers for the first week and then switch them over to BBS (live and frozen, both of which I enhance). I feed them BBS for several weeks until they are large enough to start taking various other foods.]

[So are the Baby Bangaii big enought that when they are first born they can eat enriched BBS?

Hey Andy, One of these days (not soon) could you show me how to best set up my aquarium for clown breeding?]

[Yep, my little bangaii have been eating live BBS with enriched frozen BBS and Cyclops-eeze (sp?) from the start. I feed them about 4 times per day and they are little pigs.]

[What process did you have to do to get them to mate? Was a wavemaker, moonlights, or anything else needed? Or, are they like my convict cichlids where if you dropped a dime they made babies?]
