Even when you quarantine

When my wife and I decided to get back in the hobby last summer, we promised ourselves that any fish that was introduced to our system would go through a 4 week quarantine period. When we were in the hobby ten years earlier, we weren't as patient and paid the price in lost fish. We stuck to our guns and every fish has been quarantined. The Regal Tang was actually given a prophylactic treatment of Cupramarine and Prazipro because I know that they can be subject to getting ich easily. The Regal Tang was moved to the display tank on November 20th and has been doing great. He eats heartily and gets along with tankmates. He even pals around with my two Percs. It's like watching "Finding Nemo" live. Two days ago I noticed a white spot on his body just in front of his tail. My first thought was ich but maybe it could have been fungus. This morning as the blue leds were ramping up, it was easy to see the powdered sugar look to him. I know what has to be done but I also know that I'm probably going to have to dismantle at least part of the reef just to catch him, and if I'm going to do that, I should catch all of them and leave the tank fallow for 6 weeks. It just goes to show that even when you try to do things correctly, this hobby can still jump up and bite you.

Im sorry to hear that. I have read that even when QTing fish, you need to QT everything that goes into the tank. Coral, rocks, and inverts can all carry the parasite to the tank. I have often wanted to start qting stuff, but wonder what the point is, if I cant empty my tank of all inhabitants to let the cycle completely die off. I hope you can save your fish and get everything going right. I have a power brown tang in my tang that seems to always have a little bit of ich on him. He swims around and still eats like a pig. Only problem with him, hes a bully. I can't add any other tangs into the tank with out him trying to beat the living snot out of them.

I don't think there is such a thing as eradicating ich from a system. The quarantine has done its job by keeping out the really bad stuff, such as fungus's and flukes. Going forward you need to determine what caused the ich. Was it stress or a huge variant in temperature in the aquarium. Both are very common reasons and there are more, but I would start there.

Start dosing garlic with the food for your fish. That will help as well.

Pretty interesting stuff didn't know if tank is fish less for 8 weeks it kills ich and ich going into a dormant stage is a myth

It's always possible that you didn't eradicate the parasite while during the QT process or maybe it was already in your display. What was your process during QT? How long were the proper copper levels maintained? Did you ever see any sign of crypto during QT? said:
Matt,
This is the process that I use for quarantining. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/blog/quarantining-marine-fish-made-simple . The Regal had never shown any signs of ich until the other day when I noticed the first spot. The major thing now is to catch him. None of the other fish at this point are showing any signs of infestation, but that can change quickly. I don't know if it's feasible to put 6 fish in a 20L quarantine tank for the next two months.

I'd leave the tank fallow for 8 weeks. There seems to be a nasty strain of Crypto that will hang around for longer than the typical 6 weeks . . . one guess at how I know. [smilie=wink.gif]

Here are the fish I have in my tank. Regal tang (3 in.), Naso Tang (4 in.), 2 Percs (2 in.), Blue spot Watchman Goby (3 in.), Red Spot Blennie (2 in.). Do you think it's OK to put them all in a 20L?

That seems a bit small to me for that many fish. I'd be concerned about maintaining water quality and aggression. Would you be able to go larger like a 40B?

I was thinking about that. I was just in Petco this morning buying dogfood and they still have their 1$/ gallon sale on.

If you did that you could just add a overflow box and return pump and use the 20L as a sump which would then give you even more water volume.
