Eunice Worm

Has anyone else ever had to battle with one of these guys? They go above and beyond the normal role of pests and still give me the willies four years later!

This bad boy was my first pest battle ever with a saltwater tank. My tank was only 3 gallons and it was 12 inches long by the time I finally caught him.

They have FIVE sets of jaws so they can burrow through limestone all day long. I thought I had found his burrow hole one time and tried to seal it up with caulk, thinking that he'd either A) starve or B) eat the caulk and really die. [smilie=lol.gif]

No, that bastard made like 8 more holes for his home in my one piece of rock in my tank. Then I tried pulling him out. I cannot tell you how many hours I tried to wait with some tweezers, but they are fast like lightening! He began to snatch hermit crabs, sexy shrimp, even entire frags of coral, drag them below the sand and ACROSS THE TANK to his hidey hole.

Then I found out that they're like earthworms that if you pull at the and end up tearing them apart, you now just have two Eunice worms. Great.

So eventually my dad and I gave up on trying to save all the SPS on my handsome piece of rock and got a bucket, some water, and a chisel and hammer. We busted it open and not only was he HUGE, he flipped himself around so hard that he went airborne and we both screamed and ran away. I come from a family of sissies, I know.

We came back and he was making a break for under the oven! I decided to let the cold kill him and left him in a large glass baking dish and show everyone who came over my very first hunting trophy.

I bought one of those once, exactly like that pic. I was actually buying a medusa worm, but that is what I received. Didn't know a thing about them 10 years ago. I never lost anything that I noticed & it was a 38 gallon tank. Tank crash took care of it & everything else. Was yours the same as the pic or black?

Mine was just like the pic, but it really doesn't do it justice. Mine had very bold red and white stripes along with being extremely iridescent. I agree it was pretty, but I really, really have a deep seated hate for any kind of worm now. Bristleworms aren't safe in my tanks.
