Emerald Crab removal

Besides using a spear type of devise to impel an Emerald crab what are some other ways to catch one. I was thinking of luring them into some type of container but not 100% sure of what I can use. Spearing them is not out of the question as at least one of them has started to eat my corals, I have now caught it eating on my Green polyped Leather and now a SPS frag. Any ideas?

I usually just reach in the tank and grab them. You can put a net over them as well, but I've never had much of a problem just grabbing them out of the tank.

So far not as hard as I had originally thought. I was able to lure one onto a small piece of LR with a silverside. I was able to just remove the LR so he is now in the sump. I almost had the second one but he and a Brittlestar got into an epic battle on the tongs fighting for the bait. I'll try again in an hour. If I can get him onto the sand I'll just pick him up, although this second guy is huge, about a 2" - 2 1/2" body.

Salad tongs work great :) Or chop sticks if you are good with them. I had one about that size, be wary of the claws, they do hurt.

My emeralds are great at keeping my tank clean of the items other inverts will not eat. I have only caught one messing with a coral and after a few days of prodding he got the hint to leave it alone. If you get them out are coming on this side of town I will take the emeralds. Just let me know.

You can try using nori or seaweed on a clip lowered into the tank near where you see them and they will come out to get it.. then get them with the net...

Drop a mantis in there!! J/K i have poked and prodded them to climb on a rock that i can easily remove, or i just coax them out into the open with a piece of algae sheet rubberbanded to a piece of live rock rubble. This uaually works since the crab feels more secure attaching to the live rock rubber.

Got the other one out same way as the first.

I have always had Emeralds and never had a problem, but I've never had any larger ones. I have always heard the larger ones can eat on corals, guess I should have listened. I noticed a couple of months ago that some of my sps would have a damaged corallite but it would heal up in a couple of days. I never saw anything messing with them so I couldn't figure out what was causing it. Then about every other week my Green Polyp Leather and Yellow leather would have a chunk of the cap gone. I went through the typical suspects but never could see anything, until this morning. In just a couple of hours I ran one of them off of the GPL twice and then off of a sps frag. Then ten minutes later one was on my ORA Tri-color, that was it they were coming out immediately. I started this thread and then got the first one out in about 5 min. I was so pissed I was really considering taking a knife to him. Oh well, lesson learned and all is well.

Capthlp, I might take you up on that, I let you know.

so sould u not have emerald crabs? said:
I pulled out as many as I could and stuck them in the 24g for a few weeks. I don't remember seeing any crab survivors after two doses. I bought some more Emerald Crabs later to add to the 220g. I've never seen any issue with them.

 i could lend you our mantis

j/k of course, lol...ive seen a larger one cause problems before, ive never put one in my tank and have always been hesitant because of that
