DYI Stand Plans - Overkill?

I'm considering building a tank myself for a 100 gallon and I ran across http://www.fishandtips.com/index.php this link from a old post in this forum. After I punched in my parameters ( tank = 60.5l x 18.5w x 24.5h ) (stand = 60.5l x 18.5w x 35.5h), it suggested I use 4x4s for everything!!

Is this WAY overkill or actually necessary? I ask because the stand for the 100 gallon has a combo of 2x4 and 2x6's and another stand for a 80 gallon is made from plywood!

I was wanting to make the stand so that I could have more room inside ... but 4x4s make it difficult.

Yes, it is overkill. I posted that some time back and actually bought the 4x4s to build a stand for my 120. I assembled the top frame section and realized that once built, I wouldn't be able to move the darned thing inside because it would be too heavy!

Check this thread for some great ideas on stand construction as well as seeing what I ended up doing.
