Durso Standpipe

I think I have narrowed down the "water trickling" noise down to the overflow chamber...

I read on Reef Central about the Durso Standpipe.

How easy are these to install? Are the worth it? Any ill effects? How do people like theirs?

Thanks to anyone in advance for their assistance.

Easy to build and install.

An absolute must in the tank IMO.

Will make a bit of noise as you adjust the vent hole and let the pipe coat with a little slime - but after a few days should be acceptably quiet.

Thanks Marc...I was actually looking at the site earlier, and wanted some opinions from some members that were "more knowing" (not I). :)

I am lazy, and think I might just purchase one from that site...just need to figure out what size my bulkhead is!

It is super easy to make, and will cost you about $5 in materials each. I wasn't referring you to the site to buy one - sorry. It was the picture. That site is linked to my What Is A Sump page on my own site.

If your bulkhead is 1", you'll want a reducer (1.25" to 1" -or- 1.5" to 1"). If the bulkhead is threaded internally, the reducer needs to have threads. If it is a slip fitting, the reducer should be slip.

Then all you need is the same size (1.25" or 1.5") tee, 90 degree elbow, and cap, plus a length of the same diameter pipe.

No glue necessary, just press it together. Drill a 3/16" hole in the cap.

My reef has two of them, and it works perfectly and silently.

If you prefer to make covers to avoid snails or fish going down the drain, some have secured eggcrate (lighting diffuser) over or within the elbow's opening with zipties.

Yo bro

check out DNA.. last time i was there they had about 300 of the sittin in there used section for cheapp.. check it outt..

No, but usually people have better results from a larger Durso reduced into the smaller drain. I believe it is because air can mix in with the water up higher, and then become mostly water as it enters the bulkhead.

The middle of the Tee actually. The water flows up into the 90, into the tee and down the drain.

I would have the middle of the Tee about 3" from the base of the overflow teeth, max. The cap should be above water level, right at the top edge of the tank.

Few questions...
Do you prefer treaded over slip bulkheads?
I understand if you have 1" then go with 1.25 but I read that if you have 1.5 bulkhead you do not need to go with larger. I would think the more flow the better I'm going to use a Dart 3600 for return so 1.75 I don't think would hurt.

Thanks, Rob

My personal preference for bulkheads is threaded (tank side) / slip (plumbing side).

With 1.5", you can make the durso the same size.

That should work. Usually in those types of drains, they drill a large hole on each side of the U section about midway in the apex, instead of on the very top. It lets air in but supposedly keeps it quiet. I've never run that type so I don't know for sure.
