Durso Noise

So my durso is still gurgling quite a bit. I have a return going into the sump from my return pump to help adjust the flow and I feel like I have gotten it about as quiet as I can with a fairly low flow. How else can I quiet the noise from the durso? Do I need to drill the hole bigger?

Stick an airline tube into the top ofthe durso. It will help a lot. Also, it will take about 14days for it to slime internally, which helps a lot.

I just did what you suggested and it made a big difference. However, now my water level in the overflow is fluctuating. It's like it's creating a cyphon pulling more water then it fills back up. Is this normal? Will it just take some time for it to settle out or should I adjust the flow now to match this? Either way it made a big difference in noise. Thank you!

The surging means its not getting enough air. You need to tune it. You don't want too much air coming in or it will make noise. Too little and it surges. You can go 2 ways.

Start drilling small little holes in the cap testing each time until the water level is consistent and the surging stops

Go with a bigger tube and if that fixes it try adding a valve to the tube to throttle down the air until it starts to surge again and then back off a little until it stops. Also test adjusting how much tube you have pushed down the durso to reduce the noise. There should be a sweet spot.

Like reeferwannabe said, it will take a couple weeks and it should quiet down (or you'll get used to it) but you shouldn't hear sucking or whistling, just the fall of water in the pipes and the air escaping once it gets down into the sump.

You can reduce the sump noise by dumping into a filter sock or have the drain pipe only go about a half or quarter inch into the water. Too deep and it's really bubbly sounding, not deep enough and it splashes.

I have a mag 9.5. 75 gallon tank, 1" drain, 3/4" return. Return pump is feeding deluxe reactor(water running through it but no media yet) and then a ball valve controlled return to the tank to control flow. I have a 1/4" hole drilled in my durso cap.

Do what Ben mentioned. There will be a sweet spot for the tubing and make sure the drain is around 1/2" below the water in the sump. I have no filter sock and no sucking/whistling noise from the durso either. The only time I do get flow surges in the overflow is when the tubing gets salt creep inside the tube.

Thanks for the help guys! I will start playing with it and working on what y'all suggested. I'll give it a couple of weeks to "slime" up and then go from there if more changes are necessary.

The Mag 9.5 is too much pump for a 1" drain, and your Durso hole is a little bit too big. It should be 3/16. Since you've stuck airline tubing in there now, restricting the hole to an 1/8" diameter, it's going to be a little tough to get that just right. You could plug the hole with putty and drill a new correct size hole in a different spot.

How long has this been running exactly? The 14 day thing is a real solution, and it seems like no-one is getting the memo. :)

Well, I figured the 9.5 would be a bit much, but with the feedback into the tank plus feeding the reactor I thought it would be about right. It has only been running for 3 days.

Here is the overflow as it stands.

Here is my drain/return. Left is the drain, right is the return to the sump from the return pump

Like Marc, I think the 9.5 is a bit much. I'm confused on your reactor setup in line with your return, can you please provide a picture as I just can't picture it? I'm running the BRS dual canister (GFO/Carbon) that uses a separate pump. Works flawless so far.

It's kind of hard to see but the middle valve of the manifold feeds the reactor. The return from the reactor feeds back into the first chamber of the sump

The reactor uses maybe 90gph of flow of what that Mag pump is pushing. Close the valve 50% feeding your tank and you'll probably see better results. A 1" drain is better around 300-500gph.

How much should I feel the water coming out of the return into the tank? I feel like it is very little when I open the valve enough to stop the surging.

I thought the valve was on the line going back up to the tank, above the return pump. Closing the valve to slow the flow going up to the display tank will not result in surging; your drainline would have to be submerged more than 1" in the sump and the Durso clogged for the overflow's water level to rise and fall.

I have a ball valve between the pump and the tank, but it stays fully open. The valve I am adjusting is the valve that stems off the return line back into the sump. Opening that reduces the flow to the tank, closing it increases the flow to the tank.
