Durso help please

My Durso is having a small problem. I believe it's clogging up with salt. When I come home the durso is sucking air and is low. I stick a tooth pick through the hole, and boom it levels back out. What do you guys do? Do you drill a bigger hole to avoid it or what? The hole I have is about the size of a tooth pick. Thanks for the help.

well, I am going to add a john guest 90 degree 1/4" adapter to mine, run a short cable to a john guest ball valve and see if it gives me better control and stops the clogging thing.

I'm wondering if the clogging is just something we'll have to deal with, because won't the john guest 90 clog as well? I understand how you'll be able to adjust it, but I would think that would have to be cleaned at least periodically. Or has some one else proven the system works? I'm wondering if I should drill a bigger hole so it won't clog as easy, and therefore clog less frequent. BTW, where a good place to pick up one of those 90's in case I decide to go that route? Thanks Glenn

Thanks guys. One last question...where in HD should I look. I don't want to spend another hour looking for a part like I usually do. Thanks again!

John Guest (knock off's at least) fittings at Home Depot - Go to the plumbing aisle, the one with PVC fittings. Usually at the end of the aisle there's a pegboard like rack with lots of little esoteric fitting in plastic baggies. The JG clone fitting will be in there, in my experiences usually on the left side of the display.

Thanks Brian. I wonder if I'll ever get this thing running.
The kids keep asking when are you putting fish in.

Agreed with all of the above. By remotely locating the JG with valve you will greatly reduce the clogging efect as where the salt creep lands will be a bigger hole. Still have to clean occasionally just not nearly as often as otherwise.

In my home depot they are located by the sprinkler heads. Usually at the back half of the store but same aisle as regular plumbing.

I have been using a John Guest fitting and tubing to a remote valve for a long time, and yes, you will still need to clean it periodically. Mine will go about two months max before I have to yank the Durso out and clean it.

Even with the remote valve, the clog still happens in the fitting that you screw into the Durso cap.

You also need a 1/8" "National Pipe Thread" tap to thread the hole for the fitting in the Durso cap. I will bring my drill and tap to the next meeting for those that need a cap drilled and tapped.

Thanks for the help everyone. Todd, I used a plug method, and it seems to be working. Thanks for the info though. Here's how it turned out.

that looks pretty sharp......since we are on derso's, what would you do if you could not fit a derso in your over flow? do you bring pvc straight up, and leave it open with airline tubing in it?

If it would fit in the space you have, you could try a Durso with just the T at the top and no 90 degree elbow for the inlet. You may have to place the T a little lower than normal on the stand pipe and then adjust the water level so it is a little above the horizontal opening of the T. Hopefully you can understand my rambling. It would be much easier to explain if I was showing it to you.

This may not work quite as well as a complete Durso, but I think it should work better than a plain stand pipe.

how much space does that need? i am thinking i have about 6-8" inside my over flow....i will take pics and put up tomorrow
