Durso drain pipe

I have all the fittings for the Durso stand pipe for my 75g.

My question is: Where do I position the downspout "T" inside the overflow box?
Near the top, in the middle, or at the bottom closest to the bulkhead.

I am assuming that the cap with the air hole should be above the water level.

you can put it where you want. the lower it is, the further it is for the water to cascade down. (more noise)

some people lower theirs so the top of the durso isnt visible.

have fun.

Yes, the cap and its 3/16th hole should be above water. I like to have the Tee and Elbow 2" below the teeth of my overflow so the water only drops a little bit.

OK, so I have this up and running now and it is noisy as all get out. The bottom of the turndown spout is 4" below the bottom of my overflow teeth. I drilled the air hole in the cap on the top. The water flows almost to the top of my overflow teeth.

So now that I see it in action I have questions. Do I need to raise the riser tube up to lessen the drop that the water falls? Also I will have to check my hole. I am not sure if I made it 3/16 but may have it smaller than that.

Sounds like the hole in the cap is too big. Also how far is the center of the tee below the overflow teeth....mine seemed to work best with the center of the tee 1" - 1.5" below the overflow teeth. Also it's best to drill the hole alot smaller at first then you can fine tune it. To test if the hole is too big just cover it with a finger...the water level inside the overflow box should decrease. You can either buy a new cap and redrill, put a air valve in the existing hole, put a piece of airline tubing in the current hole(will reduce the diameter of the hole) or use silicon to reduce the size of the hole. Cheers,

when you mention noisy, you need to explain?

the water level should be in the middle of the Tee/Elbow assy.

does the water level stay constant, or go above the elbow, and then below creating a slurping noise? (this is caused from not a large enough hole.

(you never mentioned if you drilled holes in the Tee on the sides at the bottom of where the 90 goes in.)

some of these will help diagnose the problem. (i wouldnt go drilling holes or closing holes yet. more info will help a lot)

Are you testing this with freshwater - which is noisy - or saltwater (which will quiet down in the next 14 days)?

Someone told me about a one-way valve that you screwed into the hole on top of the durso to quiet it even more. Has anyone heard of this?

Usually a valve is used to control precisely how much air is getting into the stand pipe. If the hole is the right size, sound usually isn't a factor. If you want to redo it, get a new cap and drill it with a smaller hole. Install it and if it isn't working right, gradually increase the hole size with the next sized drill bit.

If you can't remove the cap, you could fill the hole with putty or silicone, and drill a new hole.

The hole in the cap is only 1/16".

The water level is at the bottom of the turndown 90.

The flow is constant, no surging.

Using saltwater.

Covering the hole does not make a difference.

I think the noise is the overflow water is dropping too far. I can extend the main tube closer to the teeth.

I am guessing that I need a bigger hole but don't know the next increment I should try.

I drilled a 1/8" hole in the cap and now I have surging.

I extended the main tube and eliminated the noise from the overflow water dropping too far.

Do I make the hole bigger still?

Try out the main site these came from originally. He provides images and information here: http://www.dursostandpipes.com/

Oddly enough I did use the DIY site when I built the pipe but had since lost the bookmark when I changed computers. I appreciate the link.

I will have to wait a bit before trying again because of the baffle adhesion failure in the sump. I guess I did not use enough silicone.

I appreciate your patience and the information.

yes. there are 3 holes in that area. one on the back side, and one on each of the sides. these help in the siphoning effect that you get from some dursos.
when the water level goes up, it creates a siphon. (naturally) and then when the water level goes down, normally it would make a loud slurping noise. the holes aid in that and prevent all the noise.

it also gives more air to systems that have a slower flow rate. with a higher flow rate, the dursos need less air. with slow ones, more air is needed. (that is what isneeded to understand in order to tune the DIY ones. ) in my opinion of course.

I noticed a surging again about 10 days after drilling the 3/16" hole. I finally removed the top cap and noticed the salt had deposited inside the air hole. It was a simple matter to rinse out. I will just have to remember this as part of maintenance.
