durso drain pipe

ok well i have a 1 inch drain pipe and i was just wondering if anyone knew what is its maximum drain ability i have a return pump im using that is only doing about 280gph and im thinking of upgrading

It depends on how below the waterline the pipe draining is. What size of tank do you have? Try to keep the flow at 3-5x the tank.

Assuming you have 1-3" of water above the top of the drain pipe, your drain would be 300-500 gallons per hour.
 
Get a 1" to 1 1/4" adapter. Screw in the adapter into the 1" bulkhead. Build your durso pipe out of 1 1/4" PVC. Do the same for under the tank. Use a 1 1/4" drain right out from under the 1" bulkhead into the sump. The 1" bulkhead will not restrict the flow as much as some imagine. You should get 600 gph through it very easily. I have mine set up that way on a single Magflow overflow and it works great.
 
There is also a "hofer gurgle buster" costs about $5 in PVC parts. It will take less space than the durso drain. Did it myself without too much trouble following these directions: http://home.everestkc.net/jrobertson57268/HGB/HGB_construction.html
