Drilling tank - Where to put the overflow hole

[I have a 30 gallon that i am going to drill, but first I have a couple of questions.

1. It seems to me the overflow hole will allow water to drain down into the sump thus filling it until the water level is below the hole. This does not work like the normal syphon of a HOB..?
With this thinking I should not put the hole any lower than the amount of water that my sump could hold if the pump is turned off.... correct?

2. Should I also drill a hole on the other side for the return?

Thanks]

[That is why you have an overflow box. It will drain to the top of the box then that's it.

Having said that I wold drill near the top so you can do a horizontal overflow instead of a vertical overflow to suck more surface water.

Drilling another hole for the return is totally up to you. You can run piping up the back or through a hole. Really a personal preference thing.]
