Drilling back wall questions/help

I was lucky enough to get a 60 long from bobby, it has a 2.5" hole already in the top right. I will be drilling a other hole for the drain 1.5" what do you recommend the opposite corner from the return or a center overflow? Thanks

Are you adding an overflow box of some sort? Either a corner or center is functionally about the same. It just depends what you prefer for a cosmetic and light perspective. Normally, I prefer a corner overflow so that the center front on view is unobstructed by the overflow box in the middle of the tank. But it's just what you personally like.

Yes I will be drilling another hole and adding a overflow box. Just trying to see if there was any difference going with corner vs center overflow.

I'd certainly go with a herbie or other type of siphon drain system. If you go with two corners it is more difficult to get a truely quiet tank. If you go with one center the water flow is absolutley silent.

Do you have any pics of a setup like this?

The thread my tank is so LOUD here explains it. You can google a herbie or Bean Animal to see some great pictures Reef Central has 600 pages dedicated to the subject.

In a nutshell the sound caused by the drains is due to the water and air mixing in the pipe a traditional or Durso type standpipe is great but gets noisy with higher flows. Especially in the sump. A siphon line removes all air so it is absolutly dead silent (literally not a sound) it also removes the air bubbles in your sump and subsequently the salt creep caused by those bubbles. You can get nearly 4x the flow from a siphon line than with a traditional overflow. A herbie setup uses two pipes, not counting your return from the sump. A bean animal is a more robust system that uses three. A herbie uses the holes in the bottom of the tank a Bean Animal uses side drilled holes.

My next tank will be a 180 Gallon with a coast to coast (C2C) overflow using the bean animal overflow system.

If you need to do two overflows let me know and I can send you some pics. (far more complicated and not any better.)

I like the herbie! If my hole in the tank now is 2 1/2" what size bulkhead do I need to buy? The other hole or holes I'll be drilling are 1 1/2" what size bulkheads will I need for it? Also should I use the larger hole for the return or drain?

2 1/2" is typically approximate to the 1 1/2" bulkhead.

1 1/2" hole is 3/4" bulkhead.

The hole size is typically specified on the bulkhead you buy (sch 40 is above).

I'm running into some trouble plumbing the tank. I want to use a over the tank return and the hole for the drain. What's the quietest way to plumb the drain? It's a 1 1/2" bulkhead. Someone suggested putting a T on the back off the bulkhead and running a herbie off the top and the bottom go to the drain?

looks like 3/4 inch pipe, any reason you decided to reduce the diameter?

You will get gurgling sounds with this setup if you push more than 200 GPH through it. I highly recommend improving the drain, issue one, a 1" snail can go into but would get stuck at the reducer/ elbows clogging the drain pipe resulting in an overflow or a destroyed return pump.

You will need a strainer. Also factor in 5 gallon height adjustment when the pump turns on raising the water height in the display. Not an issue if you have a large enough return section in your sump.

Run if for an hour to ensure you like the system before adding salt. (garage is helpful)

and Enjoy!

I live in a apt so no garage... It's a 1 1/2" then reduced down to 1" my manifold I made for my 40B is 1" so didn't want to buy 3 new valves and unions. I will probably end up drilling a 1" hole next to it and a 3/4" on the other end for return. Just gotta work up the nerve to drill it :/

Don't worry about drilling, just go slow and keep it supplied with running water. The only tricky part is getting it started so use a jig to hold the drill in place and you won't have any issues.

I do really emphasise running a straight 1.5 all the way down you can use the 1" unions for your return.

Best of luck.
