I recently acquired a 20g tall nano drill 1 3/4" with a 1" buik head with a 10g sump. The overflow box and bulkhead is from here http://www.glass-holes.com/Super-Nano-con-Dientes-Overflow-Box-Complete-Kit-ghsndienteskit.htm which is rated for 300gph. Im brand new to keeping drilled tanks/plumbing and Im having trouble with the sound of water cascading down the drain pipe. It's very loud and wondering if there's anything I can do besides completely changing out the drain plumbing. I've done tons of research on things that could possibly work but no luck so far.
From the hole is a 1" bulkhead which starts with a 90 degree elbow that drops straight down 1" pvc about 2ft into a union which then drops down 1ft more with two 45 degree elbows down 1" below the waterline in the sump.
The return is a rio 1100 which pumps into a 1ft vinyl tubing then into 1" pvc approx. 2ft up into (2) 90 degree elbows back into the DT.
Things I've tried:
1. Restricting the flow of the return simply by covering 20-80% of the return nozzle. Also with a sponge. Still has loud draining sound in drain pipe with no difference. This tells me I do not need to install a valve in the return?
2. Restricted the drain same as above also with a sponge. The sponge actually eliminates the water draining sound for a bout 30 seconds until the overflow box started gurgling. Took a look inside the overflow box and its actually not getting enough water? How is this possible. I would think that the opposite would happened if Im restricting the drain from the sump. If I cover up about 80% of the drain from the exit in the sump the same happens only difference is some water spits out the airline tubing from the bulkhead elbow. I understand that putting a valve on the drain is an accident waiting to happen unless you have an emergency drain which I do not have. My question is, since Ive already manually restricted the drain with 50/50 success is it even necessary to try?
3. I heard that the end of the drain should only be 1-2" below the waterline in the sump. Mine was about 6" under the waterline so I cut it to 2" as some recommended and no luck. But now I have the sound of large bubbles gurgling in the sump. Even worse.
Do I need to just re-do the drain plumbing all together? With a dual drain? Is the noise from the straight 3ft drop with the current design? If so, will making a drain with a few twists and turns make a difference? Im not a very good DIY person and have zero experience with plumbing but Im willing to give it a try. If you have any suggestions and or advice I would be very appreciative. This noise has been driving me nuts for the last 3 days and is causing me to delay starting up the tank. Had to cancel an order on some LR. Had no idea the noise was going to be this bad. Especially for the bedroom!
