Dowflake 77-80% calcium chloride - Rhf uses it for his homemade ca/alk

[I haven't looked for it so I can't say if it is here or not but I believe I read it is for de-icing sidewalks and driveways.]

[Thanks for the info. I am going to check out HD and Lowes this weekend to find some. If I find some I will post where it came from and the price.

Mike]

[I've checked both HD and Lowe's for the availability of Dowflake CaCl2 6 months ago and came up empty. I posted the same question on reefcentral's forum and people stated that the product is not sold in the South.

My girlfriend is working in one of the research labs at UT Southwestern and I'm trying to see if she can get me some laboratory grade CaCl2. It's probably too expensive though...

[went to a pool supply place in weatherford today, foundBioGuard balance pack 300, label sez 100% calcium chloride "for increasing calcium harness"

Any comments?]

I've been looking for Dow Flake too. It's just not here in Texas. I found the calcium chloride product at Leslie's. They said it was 97% calcium chloride, 2% sodium chloride and 1% potassium chloride. I have no idea if that would be safe for the tank. Does anyone know? Those that are using Leslie's product, are you having success? I posted on Reef Central, and Randy Holmes Farley said he hasn't tested anything but Dow and cannot comment on purity, etc.

It's also used as an accelerator for concrete hardening.

I sent an email to Cooper in Garland to see if they use it (or know someone who does) and would be open to selling it.

VAN WATERS & ROGERS INC is the local distributor. They sell in 50LB bags at .30 per lb ($15 per bag).

$250 minimum order for free shipping (17 bags to qualify). Shipping quote was excessive if not at this level (she thought $40 minimum).

They will only ship to a company not an individual (I assume they would want tax id, etc) but don't care about the address.

They would not provide names of the companies they deliver to in this area so I don't know if there are retail outlets here our not.

Have been using a product for pools made by Regal to increase calcium. It has worked very well with no ill effects. Hope this helps.

Mike, what's the name of it? How long have you been using it? Do you know the percentage of calcium chloride? I'm looking for something to use that I can get locally in Fort Worth.

Kay
