Does anybody know what is it? How to cure it?

Hi All,

I got this issue in the pictures below almost everytime i dose kalwaser couple times (autotop off). All my parameters have been stable for at least two months.

dkh = 9.6
cal = 500
mg = 1475
po4 = 0
no3 = 0

If you know what is it and how to cure it please let me know. I really appreciate that. Right now, I have to brush them off manually.

Thanks,
Ken

That white fuzzy stuff? Looks almost like the result of dosing vodka to me.

It could be a type of pale hair algae. You can take out your pumps to clean them thoroughly.

It even seems to be leaning toward a dinoflaggellate outbreak, since I'm seeing some small bubbles trapped in the fuzz. It isn't caused by using kalkwasser.

Thanks Marc,

I guess i am dosing vodka a little bit too much. I did mixing it with kalwaser and RO water for auto topoff. I am going to stop vodka for a few weeks and start again with small amount.

Thanks,
Ken

I would take your pumps out and soak them in vinegar to get them thoroughly cleaned. Why are you dosing vodka? Maybe we can help you get your parms under control instead of using the vodka, so you dont get that stuff back again.

I dose vodka because it provided some benefit to my tank as i read from reefkeeping article. Anyway, I am going to clean the pump, stop vodka for a while and start it back very very small amount. I think i am overdosing it. Thanks everybody for your responses.

Vodka IN your kalkwasser top off? Bad plan over all.

If you want to dose vodka, you dose it daily by hand or you spend the money to for a doser and plug it into a timer to dose for a specific time period.

I'm not much up on the vodka dosing. I thought that most people dose to bring down phosphates. There are other methods to decrease phosphates in the aquarium besides vodka. I save the vodka for my drinks [smilie=wink.gif]. If you have some parms out of wack, there are other ways to achieve a balanced aquarium besides vodka if you are willing to try other methods. Totally up to you.

Ken, how big is your tank? The initial dose of vodka should be given at a ratio of 0.1ml/25 gallons for days 1-3, 0.2ml/25 gallons for days 4-7, and then 0.5ml for each subsequent week regardless of aquaria volume.

Do you have this article: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-08/nftt/index.php

What test kits are you using? Honestly if your po4 and no3 are truly undetectable, you really don't need the vodka.

Hi Ivan,

My tank is 75 gal (all SPS). I am using the API test kits for PO4 and NO3. I am using Salifert test kits for Ca, Mg, and Alk from BRS as people recommended. I read that article that you reference before and thought that missing it up with the autotop off will balance out the amount. My parameters are stable for about two months now. I tested it every weekend. My corals in average are doing fine. The millie ones are growing and coloring up nicely. Others are growing very very slow rate I think and not coloring up much. Anyhow, I will stop dosing vodka. It probably solve my built-up issue and improve my growing and color rate :).

Thanks,
Ken
