Doc's 40 Breeder

Hey guys, I'm in the planning stages for a 40 breeder/display refugium setup and I wanted some comments.

The plan for the main tank is primarily a mixture of SPS/LPS. For the fuge, I'm just planning on planting it for now. I eventually want to try to keep a pair of Dragonettes in the main tank and a pair of seahorses in the display fuge (probably need to get a taller tank in that case I would imagine).

A lot of my inspiration comes from B-Dare's 40 as I thought I had it in my grasp and started planning around his plumbing design. I'm still pretty convinced that it's awesome.

Before I go out and start the buying and building, I'd appreciate any comments.

Ahhh.... thanks for the compliments. I never ended up selling my 40 because I hit it with my car before the guy came to pick it up. Cracked the back panel. I have a lot of plumbing parts you can have if you'd like them (over flow box, bulkheads, PVC, loc-line...)

One thing to consider with a 36x18 footprint is the lack of space under the tank. Will you have a skimmer? It will prolly need to be external. I could not find one to fit in the sump and still give enough room to grow macro algae. Also, where will the tank be located? Although I LOVED the flow created by my CL, in the end I dumped it because of the noise generated by an 1100gph external pump. I had a pan-world which everyone said was quiet. I didn't care for the noise.

If you want to PM me I'd love to help you with this. IMO building the tanks are a LOT of fun.

Wow, that sucks. Yeah, I'll probably take what you have left off of your hands. I'm planning on building the cabinet 36". With an 18" tall tank underneath I should have at least 14" of extra height. Besides that, I don't plan on a skimmer for now. I want to grow a bunch of macro and pods in the 20 gallon. If I ever decide on a skimmer It will probably be a very small one I can hang on back.

As for noise, I've thought of two options. I'll either completely enclose the cabinet or build a sound insulating box out of MDF/foam with a cooling fan for the pump. Just more to tinker with :)

Wish I'd thought of the MDF box for the pump idea! Oh well... I've been working from home so you are more than welcome to come over anytime and pick up what I've got. I'm excited to see what you do with this!

Hey Doc, I like your plans. I have a custom built 40 breeder, my sump is 40 gal as well. This allows me to have as much space in my sump for anything. I have an ASM G2 skimmer and a huge refugium. Have you thought about going bigger on your sump? Will you need an OM Super Squirt? If so I have one that I was going to use for my 40. I wish I would have planned and asked questions first that would have saved me ALOT of trouble.
