[Just a quick poll:

Do you currently own and use an RO or RO/DI unit to make water for your aquarium(s)?]

[A DI unit is probably more effective, but you will BURN through DI media very fast without the carbon filter, the RO helps extend the life quite a bit.

I have seen people with high TDS tap water burn a DI cartrige per water change.]

[Two, one hooked up to the tank to refill evaporated water and one for water changes. I also believe this is one of the most important pieces of equipment to have when keeping a saltwater tank.]

[140 dollars for a unit is worth not breaking your back. I would pay 300 dollars just to not have to go get water somewhere else.]

[Statistics are one of the things I do as a hobby, and at work. I feel that in this instance people who own an RO/DI unit will chime in, but that those who don't would simply vote no by not voting at all. Err... so it would be better to subtract the yes votes from the total list of active members.

A good place to do stats would be a compulsory form at member signup/renewal IMHO.

Anyways, I just recently purchased my RO/DI on Ebay for $86 brand new, plus shipping of course. I'd like to know what price ranges people pay for, and maybe even contrast that with ongoing filter replacement cost, efficiency, etc.

[Masta, I agree. I was hoping each person that reads the board would reply yes or no. So far it looks like most use an RO unit which is great news.

Also, there are a lot of people that are signed up using our message board that aren't club members so the numbers would be off.

I guess a second poll in the Members Only section would be a little more accurate, but as you stated, ALL have to vote to get a real idea.]

[I live in far West Fw (actually in Parker County) and we're on well water so we actually already had a RO unit for our drinkning water. The guy who set it up showed us the difference in ppm between regular well water and RO water and it was pretty astonishing. Since I set up my tank about 2 mo ago (110 G) I have had no nuisance algae blooms which I credit to RO water.]

I purchased a 4 stage double carbon cartridge unit. I have been running it constant for about 2 months and am now starting to replace cartridges allthough my tds are still 0 out of the di and 2 or 3 from the RO. Paid a little over 200 with shipping. Water and Ice is the co. Went through ebay. really happy with the company and the service. I needed a water connection because of how my house was set up and asked for their recommendation. Not only did they recommend a solution they sent me the connection I needed free of charge. That is good service. Sometimes the cheapest price is not the best price.

amen

[I also live in West Fort Worth / Parker county. However since I'm on well water with little pressure I have my unit set up at my office near downtown so I still haul water. But as an added benefit of the unit I also use the RODI water for drinking. I found that with filter changes and salt it cost about 45 cents per gallon compared to 90 cents at the LFS.

[CodyRay, The RODI is used for drinking and my wife also uses it to water the plants. We used to buy bottle water at the store for 79 cents a gallon so this is a bargin. At first I did not like the taste or should I say lack of taste of the water but after a while it taste fine.

Steve]

[We drink the RO water. I find that the RO/DI tends to taste 'metallic' to me. I guess I need a little TDS in my water to satisfy my palate.]

[I agree with Marc. The di water taste ......... where the Ro taste fine. We used to buy bottle but now use the Ro for cooking and drinking. That is probably why we are using up filters so fast.

:eek:oh:]

[I guess since most of the comments are on the yes, I'll put in my .02 on the no. I don't have one now and for the moment don't plan on getting one. First, with everything else I have have spent on my tank, I have not been able to get budget committee approval (wife). Its easy to say that it will pay for itself, but its easier to show small purchases of water every once in a while rather than 1 $100 plus purchase. The second reason is that I just like going to the LFS. I go to EA and Ramin is such a nice guy that it is easy to talk to him and look around whenever I get water. I might get one at some point, but just not yet.]

[Phillip,

Another point for the commitee approval.

If you don't have to go to the LFS all the time then there is less chance of spending more money on corals and other stuff while you are there so there is additional savings.....

Just be cause you use this argument doesn't mean you still can't go and look all the time though :eyebrows:]
