Do colts naturally melt at a certain size?

I have had a healthy tank for 2 years now. It is a 20g nano reef.
I bought a colt about a year ago, it grew and grew and grew.
Finally it got so big it just melted one day. Little chunks of it flew all over the tank. Everyone else was FINE, including an anemone.

Some even attached and regrew. Well the funny thing is, the colt left behind it's bottom stump. Well that grew into another HUGEEEE colt.

I am wondering if this is a natural thing they do to reproduce? Either way my colt is sooo big again I am going to have to cut this thing again. I do not want another melt down.

Do you guys think I should just cut it at it's base, and let it regrow? Or just cut it's branches off? He is the top right coral in this pic.

I haven't heard of that happening, but you ought to ask Bill - blide - and see if he has had that happen.

I keep mine trimmed fairly small, and only cut off branches. This makes for good frags

Since your tank is so small the colt pretty much runs out of room and probably sufficate's itself, so the coral drops it's branches (reproducing).

Just trim the branches and make sure it gets enough flow to recover. (FYI.. Colts are slime a lot when fragging) :D
