I recently got a UPS from another member, and I got to thinking about how to efficiently use it in conjunction with my DJ power station.
If I plugged the DJPS into the UPS, then _everything_ plugged into the DJPS would be on battery backup.. lights, heaters, powerheads, fans, skimmer, etc. Not the most efficient use of a UPS.
If I plugged the UPS into the DJPS, then only things plugged into the UPS would be on battery backup, but then the DJPS wouldn't be able to turn those items off for feeding, or individually at all.
My plan? Disconnect the last three outlets on the DJPS and run them to a separate cord that I can plug into the UPS. I pulled out a power cord w/ strain relief, resettable fuse, and some spade terminals.
When I opened up the DJPS, I noticed that all the outlets and switches were just daisy chained together with spade terminals. I disconnected the fifth switch and separated the 'legs' that go to the sixth outlet. I added a spade terminal on those wires.
I drilled a hole in the back of the DJPS, and another in the front. I used a dremel and a file to make the hole oval shaped to accomodate the resettable fuse and the strain releif bushing for the new power cable. I routed the black wire through the fuse and connected it to the sixth switch. Same with the white. I connected the ground to the same screw as the other outlets since they share a common ground (same circuit.)
