DIYReef.org now open to the Public!!!! <*Updated*>

OK, like I don't have enough things to do already...

(Disclaimer: In no way am I trying to take away from this wonderful forum!)

I realized that I spent frustating days (mainly nights) searching the Net looking for examples to base my stand and canopy design on. I had to traverse from one end of the net to the other. & DO NOT get me started on the nifty search on reef central  . When I did find them, I had to wade through countless threads that were pretty much worthless as far as their content.

So an idea came to me the other day. What if there was a place that aggregated many of the better DIYs out there on the net? Not a collection of links, but a collection of user maintained wiki pages. These pages, user moderated, would be edited compilations of great DIY project threads, refined versions of over pages on the net, etc.

What do you think? Am I crazy? I think it would work. It could become a great resource for the DIY'ers out there.

Any body interested in helping? The biggest thing I need right now is tiki-wiki administration help to configure and set permissions, features, etc.

I have installed tiki-wiki to start this project here:
http://www.diyreef.org

Please let me know what you think.

Yes, you are crazy. How ever it is a good idea. I know how you feel wadeing in threads that have a word in you search but not have any thing that you are really looking for.

Sounds like a great idea.. I help maintain some wiki articles for MythTV (http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page) which is a homebrew tivo like project for linux.

To get around the 'You gave me what I asked for, but it's not what I need' with the search, you use keywords in the wiki.

Why don't you check to see if there is a section that would work in Travis' reefpedia? www.reefpedia.com said:
Marc I have seen that and figured it really was geared more of an encyclopedia of Marine knowledge. I figured the one I was creating would be a compendium of DIY knowledge. I really could go either way.

No problem. I just had a feeling the DIY collection must be on a site already. I'm not trying to discourage your passion for the project. In fact, I commend you for taking the initiative to create something that will help others!

I like the idea. Now to get it working. -Chuck said:
Thanks Chuck,
I hope to have the somewhat final site done later this week. I am test driving mediawiki and tikiwiki right now to see which one will be the vest to use.

I will post up as soon as it's ready to go.

Cheers

Ok, it's up and ready for people who know what they are doing in wiki/article land.

http://www.guajardofamily.org/tiki

For those of you that do know how to use wiki/article site, here's the deal.

DIY submission will be articles.
After you register, there will be a link to 'Submit Article' on the left hand side.
Create your article making sure you to place it in the proper category.
Submit.
An Admin or Editor will approve the article and then it gets displayed.
Please add to & maintain.

There is still much to be done.
2. Create 'How To' wikis for wiki/article inexperienced users. They will be linked from the home page to provide quick easy access to 'How To' instructions.

3. Create an Editor group. I will need a couple of people who would like to approve submitted articles and do the first edit of said articles.

4. Create and place google adsense ad. Due to afore mentioned financial difficulties I will be placing google adsense on the site. Specifically in the right bar area for it should be fairly unobtrusive. Hopefully it will help defray the monthly charges if even just a little.

5. Create more categories if needed.

So far so good. Please let me know via email if there is anything specific you would like to help with or if you have any questions. Once everything on the todo list is done, I will let the rest of the world outside dfwmas.org know about it.

Cheers!

Domain is now registered. It will take about 24-48 hours before you can start accessing http://www.diyreef.org or http://www.diyreef.net. Both will take you to the same place. (diyreef.com was taken :( ).

I am now in the process of creating tutorials for the uploading of pics into the gallery and the creation of DIY articles.

Thanks for the support. This will be cool!

Now as a reminder, DIYReef.org WILL NOT and CAN NOT ever take the place of an interactive discussion forum like this one. A forum like this is invaluable in getting feedback about design, building and such. What DIYReef is for is when these projects are done and fairly settled, they can be placed in DIYReef.org as a central repository that is easy to find and browse.

Thanks again!

Well the site is running well and taking shape. I have added some project articles already to the site to figure out what I need to include in the tutorials. I originally wanted to do the tutorials this weekend but since I am leaving for a MTB race in the morning it will have to wait til I get back.

I did see that a few users have registered! YAY! If you are reading this, THANKS! Get in there and submit an article and try it out. I can answer any questions when I get back.

Have fun!

With the completion of the "Quick Start" tutorial tonight, I hereby proclaim DIYReef.org open for general use!

A link to the tutorials can be found on the front page or directly from this link.

If anyone has any comment, questions or suggestions, please send them my way either via the 'contact us' link on the site or email and PM here.

Contribute and Enjoy!

Cheers,
Mike

Hey Marc! How do you think they would take this on the DIY forum at ReefCentral? Should I post up there about it?

That should work out just fine. Hopefully you'll get more participation that way. I'll try to check it out in the next few days.
