diy vortech backup

I am considering putting together a simple battery back-up for my vortech mp 20 ... now, i know icecap sells one, but, my understanding is that it is just a 12V 18AH battery and the vortech controller does the rest - i just wanted to get some feedback first ...

I don't know, I just ordered the correct wire from Icecap.

Here's my DIY... Vortech battery backup for under $70 all parts new and bought locally.

Pros: performs as store bought backup, and for the price of one bought at a store, you can build two of these.
Cons: Does not have a pretty box it sits in. :wink:

Where are you keeping that? Under the tank or in a fish room? Do you think you may need to put something on the contacts to avoid corrosion? Looks like a viable solution to me.

Have you tested it to see how long they will run?

2) Overlooked protecting the terminals from corrosion - on the to do list now!
3) I tested it to insure it drove the pump @ 12v and it worked, But did not run a endurance test, however that will come down to the age/quality of the battery (this one is brand new).
