DIY Sump HELP

I am in the process of converting my 30g nano reef tank into my sump refugium for my new 55g reef tank, I have done DIY skimmers and moonlights but this seems slightly more complicated. I love learning and want to do this myself instead of purchasing a sump, love to get my hand dirty! I am just unsure what is needed and what the best build is for my tank? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated and if I need to put in more info please let me know. Thanks

at min i would say you want a skimmer section this is where the water would also enter. Then you want three pieces of glass. (get these cut at a glass shop not lowes or HD). the water should go over the first piece under the second piece and over the third piece, this should make it where you have no bubbles in your return section. This would be a very basic sump. You probable need to ask more specific questions on what you are looking for. Do some searches on sumps.

The baffles?

When I built mine I had the glass cut slightly smaller the the in-tank measurement by about a 1/4". I used some silicone and stuck them in there using DVDs as spacers.

Yeah I have a 29 tall and want to add a bubble trap and maybe a fuge area. I know they should be slightly smaller than the inside of the tank but too small might be bad too.

yes make the glass a little smaller then the width of the tank, to allow for expansion when it gets cold or hot. The height of the 2 pieces of glass that the water goes over needs to be the same. Couple things to watch for. 1. make sure you don't have the water to high in the tank that when the electricity is out you flood the sump. Also make sure it's deep enough to set your skimmer properly. if it is to deep you can put the skimmer on a stand.

There is a calculator on the main page of Reef Central that will tell you have much room you need in your sump for power out times.
