What do you all think about using this as a phosban reactor?

Hey Steve,

I'd like it more if it didn't have the metal pieces on it. You can buy a quart rubbermaid container at walmart for about $2. I'm not sure I would use it full time though. I'd have to read up on exactly how much water/time it takes to "use up" carbon and phosban. I know its not much. Looks convenient and easy and cheap to make.

Regards,
Steve

There is a thread on RC that someone said they have been using the same container for years and no rust. They don't have it summerged. My concer was do you think 2 filt floss things will keep the phosban in the reactor? I think it would work great for carbon but the smaller Phosban i am worried about.

i was just about to do the same project with the same container but was concerned with the metal clamps. i think i might just start this project now.

awesome... I just orderd a phosban reactor and some phosban but I didnt want to spend the money on a carbon one :D I think im gonna build one and see how it works

I have a couple of questions?

Why couldn't you have both carbon and phoban in the same device? My jar of phosLock says I can have it in a canister filter as the last stage. What if the DIY project had carbon in the first stage and then phosLok in the second stage? Would that create a problem?

Some people do combine them, in layers. Phosban/Carbon/Phosban/Carbon

They feel that this will guarantee flow through the media. The only drawback is the phoban may be good for 60 days while the carbon will be exhausted in far less time, and once it is used up it can become a nitrate bed.

I just run them in separate containers in my system.

What would be a good low flow powerhead to run one of these guys? I've been thinking about making one of these to just run carbon (want to ditch the HOB filter I've been using for carbon.) Is there a good non-rio powerhead with <100 gph flow?

Yes, that would be fine. You can go very slowly, as low as 1gph if you want (according to that article I linked).

I picked up one of the containers today and plan on running it and the phosban on the same powerhead. These containers are pretty big though..

Im waiting on my phosban so I can figure out the best plumbing solution to run them both off a maxijet 400

thanks for the great idea. I have made 2 of the units and have 1 currently running carbon for the second day with no leaks. I have not tried the phosban yet. Does anyone have a suggestion on what brand phosban to go with?

well bud...
theres basically two, Phosban (Two Little Fishes/Julian Sprung) or RowaPhos. I just got some RowaPhos, but it costs more. Really, Phosban is great and is cheaper

(Hey look..I made a "tiny" :p )

Well, I just finished building the body of one of these myself.. Instead of using a spade bit and cpvc, though, I drilled it to 11/16 and used a 1/2" pipe tap.

I just leak tested it, and even without putting teflon tape on the threads yet, no leaks.

The input hole needs to be centered about 1" up from the bottom. The output hole needs to be about 3/4" down from the top metal ring and offset slightly from the input so that they won't interfere

this sounds backwards...is it? Shouldnt the output be at the bottom, otherwise why would you put the filter floss at the bottom.

Ehn.. if the power ever went out, the filter floss at the bottom would keep the media from getting sucked back down the line.

At least that's my guess. :)

A filter floss sandwich..

"One will go on top of the media riser (at the bottom ) and the second can be used on top of the media (like phosban) to help keep it from escaping into the tank."
