diy live rock, lace rock, aragocrete, lava rock, holey rock

Hi all -
anyone try making rock? like aragocrete or whatever? I've gave it a couple of shots, and FAIL. The rock just crumbles to bits and has 0 strength.

I then read that my 'crete was old, which it was - 3~ yrs . . .

so I got a new bag, and tried again. Mixed 3:1 instead of 4:1 or even 5:1 per all the websites, and the rock still just crumbles.

I don't get it.

So then I found some post about whiz-q stone, and lace rock and lava rock. I googled, and found mixed results with both types of rock. It seems that some lace/lava rock may have metals in it, depending on where it came from.

Anyways - anyone use any of this stuff either?

Any DFW sources for holey rock?

Thanks all -

hopefully this quarry will be good.

i went there early this morning. it was pretty cool.

they had like 5 pallets of lace rock, and maybe 4 pallets of tufa rock. the tufa rock looked thick, with not-deep holes, and looked sandy when it broke.

the lace rock is pretty sexah. there was one piece shaped like a geode that was so big i couldnt move it.

the lace rock is sort of heavy though, but I got some that had some pretty good holes in it. I put 5 pieces on my cart and weighed in at 101 lbs :/

my limit was 50lb, so I put one rock back .. it was about 20" tall by about 12"x10" base with holes all over it. . . anyways that took me to 70 lbs with 4 rocks.

One i wanted to keep big, the others I was going to break in half.

So this one piece, i hit it with a hammer and it spilt right where i didnt want it to. it did a real clean fracture.... im sure that someone that knows how to work with rock could break it in a controlled manner probably , ,i was just bashing on it with a claw hammer. kids, wear your safety specs.

anyways , i washed the rock with a pressure hose, and then put it in the tank. pics to follow.
