DIY Lighting for my Canopy

Ok so I'm thinking of eventually going reef. I have a 72" long and 18" wide tank. I can't remember how tall my canopy alone is but I was wondering if anyone would be willing to help. Maybe ideas or how you did it. What equipment I will need. I've never actually DIY anything so this would be a first. I a thinking T5 HO lighting since it might be cheaper.

How much would it approximately cost for T5 or LEDs? I have T8 now that came with tank but all I have is a FOWLR. Even though mushrooms came with rock and some polyps and also Montis are maintaining very well. I also have a lot of coraline algea growing. I'm guessing I've been lucky since after a lot of research T8 are no good for reefs since the output.

Or depending on price I would be willing to pay someone to do it. For now I'm just wondering.

If you like the color of your T8's with the FOWLR. I would just go with what you have for now. For a fish only tank, you just want the fish to look great, so you dont need to pay for expensive lighting.

I see that you say you plan on going to a reef later on. To get started I think you need to tell a bit more about your existing setup.

1. What size skimmer do you have on your current system?
2. What kind of corals do you plan on keeping?
3. Do you have a sump?
