Display tank, refugium, ADDITION SUMP advice?

OK, here we go. I currently run a 29 gallon display tank with an overflow hob to a 10 gallon refugium with chaeto and rubble. Return pump is a Rio 1200 that I honestly have to back off using a valve. . I soooo want to add an additional plastic tub of around 30 gallons with live rock and a skimmer. But for the life of me, I can't decide how to plumb this freaking thing. The refugium is below the display tank and I planned on the plastic tub/sump being next to the refugium. How the heck do I achieve this with the least amount of chance of flooding, power outages concern. Help!

If the tub is taller than the refugium, I would run the overflow from the display to it, and drill it - the tub - on the side to plumb it to gravity flow to your refugium. Is that easy enough?

Obviously when you do this make sure the first tank will hold enough water for the skimmer to do its job..
AND test for a power outage as far as water level is concerned..

Well geesh David, you have solved my dreams! Lol (btw, all the corals I bought from ya are still thriving)(got anymore? Lol)

And thanks for the advice Matthew!

It sounds like a great way to add space to, and improve your system. I am glad that your corals are doing well! And I do have a few more acro/milli frags left. [smilie=smile.gif]

Ok David, question. Do I add the intake to the tub (from the overflow) at the top or bottom of it. What about the outtake? I plan on using bulkheads. I will have the tub/sump next to the dt and refugium (within about 2 feet).

Well, I run pvc from my display to the sump without using any bulkheads at the sump. I would think you could do the same from your display to the tub. Just stick the pipe, or hose from the display into the tub would be the easiest thing to do, I think. I would think that the outlet of the tub would be near the top of the side of it to where you could go into the refugium right over the top of it. I'm not there, so I can't say definitively what you would do.

Ah OK. I can vision that. I'll just run the display outflow using PVC directly into the tub and choose the water level I want from the tub to the refugium using PVC as well. But I guess the inflow should be lower than the outflow, as to protect from power failures. Interesting...(my simple mind keeps thinking)
