displacment ???

It displaces a volume of water equal to the volume of the rock.

So, if the rock is small a very dense, a smaller amount.

If larger and less dense, a larger amount.

1 Cubic inches = 0.004329 Gallons [US]

Assume a square piece of rock 12" x 12" x 1" = 144 cubic inches * 0.004329 Gallons = 0.6 Gal

Given the branching, open nature of most of the coral rock, this can obviously only yield a very rough approximation.

Or something like that I think.

That is the challenge, determining of the space occupied, how much volume is actually occupied.

If it seems 1/2 the space is air, a 5 gal drain should be more than sufficient.

Kind of depends on how much aggravation it would be draining more (and do remember you have to factor in the volume displaced by your arms while you place the rock) versus the aggravation of slopping a couple of gallons of water on the floor.

Please post how much you take out and how much you put back. I'm sure others have the same kind of quandry when adding new stuff.

Thanks

you could always go get a 5 gallon bucket big enough for it the rock to fit in, fill it completely full with water...place the entire bucket in a larger container, then place the rock in it and measure how much water overspills into the second conatainer. if you really want to be precise that is...

It only displaced about 4 gal. I drained 10 into a container to put my other rocks and coral in until i got this monster in the display.
So here is a pic of my new frag rack. Thanks again for all the advice!

Thanks, i did this so i could keep SPS and have them closer to the lights. And the size, so i have plenty of room for sps now. :D
