Dinoflagellates

I am having an outbreak of them and I need to know the best way to get rid of them. I know by cutting off the light and increasing flow they will dwindle but to what effect on my corals, fish and clam? Any suggestions would be great.

Interesting....you are not really going through new tank effects, have you added new sand/LR or rearranged/disturbed the substrate recently? It could be tied to your source water, folks have been noticing higher TDS readings and increased filter exhaustion which are attributed to the recent weather pattern's(rain). Silicates and phosphates contribute to dino outbreaks as I am sure you are aware. Also.. most flake food have lots of phosphates added so if you are using flake, you may want to cut waayyy back or stop using it. Make sure you are blowing the dino off your corals, it could smother them. May be time for "lights out" for a few day's.

Cheers!

i had it real bad months ago, the only thing i changed was i started to dose a cup of kalk in the A.m. before the lights came on.....the dino went away about a month latter.

Supposedly dino can not survive with higher PH levels...so that would explain why you saw improvements. I would assume the source remains in these cases but are being mitigated. They mention this in this article. http://www.kipsreef.com/algae.htm

Cheers!
