Well went by Rift to Reef and gave Dane a deposit on the tank today. It will be set up like DaveJ's tank with the overflow on one end of the tank. Dane thinks it should be ready at the end of the month first of next month so that gives me some time get some things together. So far I am planning on using as much of the equipment I have from my duel 125's with some new items such as:

4 Tunze 6101's with a controller for flow in the tank( I have these now)

New skimmer to be determined( If Bimmers gets his new one I may buy his MSX 250)

I have a small Knopp calcium reactor( may need larger or suppliment with Kalk)

I have a new Aquazone plus 100 Ozonizer

2 400 watt Se Halides with the large Luminbright(?), I will probably need some T5 actinics.

I will be using my existing 75 G sump/fug. It works great on my existing system and has a 6-7 inch deep established sandbed. No nitrates at all even with Salifert. I feed heavily too.

I will be making a steel base and plan on skinning it with a plywood veneer with stain and a good marine poly finish.

That is the plan and I know that I have not included everytlhing(especially pictures), but I am open to suggestions. :D

ooooh, very nice, those tanks are beautifully made. looking forward to it for sure, grats!!!

Awesome Dennis!

Glad you decided to buy a great tank. Don't forget to have them drill the overflows to your specs...the original ones I believe are a little small for the size of the tank.

Welcome aboard the Deep Dimension club!

It is kewl to see another large tank going coming to Garland. Maybe we will have a enough for an all Garland, Rowlett and Wyle tank tour some day.

Dennis,

Have you given thought to a external "calfo style" overflow. Oh yeah....in order to get my new skimmer, I was hoping you would buy my old one.

Cheers,

Copycat :) Just kidding.. you'll like the tank for sure. However, don't be surprised if it takes a bit longer to get it. They told me 3-4 weeks and it ended up being 6 or 7 by the time we got all the specs approved and such. Depending on how who Dane is ordering from, if its through Lone Star, they can be a bit slow in their communication with Marineland.

As far as your lights go, you'll want to make sure that two will be enough, not for the amount of light, but for the coverage. Since these tanks are 36" wide and 6' long, the reflectors either need to be set higher, or put on a third to get the coverage. Before you plan out your canopy or light structure, get the lights wired up with the reflectors and see what kind of spread you get at various heights.

On your overflows.. you'll want to make sure you get the style you want. When they first sent me the design specs, they had two curved overflow boxes side by side. I wanted squared ends, a rectangle, so I had to specify that and get it verified. I don't know which you prefer, but since I am putting in a foam/LR covered panel to hide the wavebox and vortec's on that side, having it flat and not curved was needed.

The 1.5" are standard and work just fine on these tanks, at least with mine they did.

I may have to talk with Dane on the overflow(s). I want the single overflow at the end like your set-up. I plan on putting the tunze pumps on both sides of the overflow box. so the single box like your works best. I told Dane I wanted it set up like yours but I better make sure he got the message. :) Oh, I am not a copycat, It told them to put the overflow on the other end of the tank. :p

Yup, their standard overflows are the curved ones. Even when my original drawing had a box/rectangle they still put the curved on the drawing, so just keep on top of it and insist they do it the way you want and you'll be fine. They quoted the layout the way I drew it, so when they came back and said if I wanted the box, I'd have to pay more we hit them back with the original drawing that they quoted on and someone ate the cost, either Lone Star or Marineland.... not sure which did but I didn't care so long as it wasn't Frank.

Dennis,

Even if you go with a single overflow, I'd ask them if they can have dual drain holes. I'm paranoid when there's a single point of failure. I'd hate to have my sump emptied into the main tank. Even if it doesn't overflow, you could burn up pumps and screw up your salinity.

Just my two cents.

i would reccomend the use of pond liner or a 4 inch acrylic "drip pan" under your sump.

two large will not be enough on my 250 i run three large you will get the shadowing effect with two of them even with actinics.

I would drop the ballasts to 250 watts you will be really surprised at the par that gets redirected into the tank.

I am thinking about putting a 250 between the 400's but I may not need it. I plan on doing some mock set-ups and maybe getting a par meter and checking the values at the projected water surface. I really won't mind if the overflow end of the tank is a little on the shaded side. Some fish and corals like lower light.

It's a three sided overflow with 2 drains two returns. I've been dealing with marineland directly and letting my distributor do just that. Distribute.

I will be getting a faxed copy of the design for Dennis to look over and sign and send back to Marineland.

It does seem 300 gallons are the new 180s doesnt it ;)

I love to see all these large tanks (200 gal and larger) coming to the area and it is very exciting to watch all the build threads just to see them evolve and the thought process that goes into each of the decisions. Like always take a lot of pictures of each of the steps.
