Dead Stuff?

A whole bunch of dead "things" have broke o of my cured rock and are all over my sand bed. How do I get it out? I want to do a water change but if I get too close to the sand it will suck it up! its not afecting levels just ruins look of aquarium. I do not have a protein skimmer either.

Well you can
1. Suck it up with a hose and lose a little bit of sand.
2. Pick it out by hand.
3. Leave it! After you get a CUC they will work to eat that stuff up.

Why dont you have a protein skimmer that is prob one of the most important pieces of eqpt in a reef tank. It cleans out the gunk in the water and aerates the water

Depending on the size of junk littering your sand bed, you can use air line tubing to siphon it out with out sucking up a lot of your sand bed.

Thanks for the link. If I close up the airline tubing with a knot to slow the flow would that work? I don't want to lose sand.

whether or not it works depends on the size and weight of the stuff you are trying to pick up with a siphon.

You could siphon the "dead stuff" along with the a little sand into a bucket. Stir it pretty good and the funk will float in the water column and the sand will settle out pretty quick. Pour off the water and replace the sand.

I have the protein skimmer that the guy I bought my tank from (75 gallon) originally had, it's DIRTY as it's been sitting in the storage closet on my patio, and no pump, but the price is right....what ever the gas is that it takes to come get it, if you're interested. Heck I might even run some hot water/vinegar over it and clean it up a bit. PM me if you want it
