Dave's 40 gallon 36x15x17

I currently have a 46 gallon bow front with a 192 watt PC fixture over it. I got the 46 bow front for free and I figure its time for a change. I am going to sell about half of the live rock and I am going to frag a bunch of the coral from my 46. The rest is going in the 40 gallon

The new tank is 36"x15"x17". I found this 40 gallon on craigslistHere are the pics of the tank next to my 46 gallon (excuse the quality it was taken with my phone)....

I am going to use the PC light fixture I have for now. Not sure if I am going to go with a retro in the canopy or not but its a possability.

I probably shouldnt set this tank up until I move at the begining of December but I dont think I can wait.

Has anyone ever re used their sand? I have about 1-2" in my 46 gallon that I am thinking of vacuuming really well and then re using. I have never doen this before and was wondering if it was OK to do. I know that if you have a deep sand bed it gets really nasty in the bottom but I only have an inch or two of sand.

Also going to paint the back black this week. Anyone know what paint is best to use? I have painted a few tanks and i usually use the regular semigloss paint. Its hard to get a good coat with that though. I usually have to paint it like 3 times to cover all the streaks

nice find! why are you moving from the 46 to the 40? a downgrade? shouldnt it be the other way around? :) do you not like the bow, hard to clean and maintain or just because? good luck with it...

rinse it thoroughly, keep a cup or two of the top most layer...if you smell rotten eggs you dug too deep

The 46 gallon I have was free. It is missing the top support bracket which makes me a little nervous even though its been like that for over a year. And I want a shallower tank. And your right about cleaning the bow front. Its sort of a pain. I have always liked the footprint of the 40 gallon breeder tanks too.

Once I get in a place I am going to live in for a long time I am going to do a custom 65gallon rimless tank with a sump and fuge and everything. For now its sumpless simple tanks that are relatively small.

I am moving out of my downtown loft in Nov because my lease is up. I am moving to my girl friends place for a few months until her lease is up and then we are getting a place together. So this tank is going to be somewhat temporary. And we have a baby on the way due in April!

Congrat's :!: :!: :!:

Cheers,

Well I decided on what lighting I am putting on this tank. I picked up a current USA 192 wat PC fixture for $20. I was going to put a retro fit in the canopy but the canopy it came with is too shallow. Plus the deal on this fixture was too good to pass up. I will be moving into my new place on November 22nd so sometime that week I will be setting up the new tank in the new place. Its hard having an empty tank sitting there not being used.

40g breeders have the perfect foot prints. It makes cleaning so much easier.

I kinda liked the canopy, but the way you have it now will make working in the tank much easier - just slide that light back (may want to place some sort of safety back there so it won’t slide off - just in case).

If you're going to be moving to your girl's place for a bit and want to set it up there, why not move it now?! Also, it will prevent you from "accidentally" setting it up.
Plus, you can start adding rock, etc, and have the cycle and setup complete before you move. Just a thought...

that plan has changed. She is breaking her lease and we are moving into a place together at the end of November.

So this tank is going to be set up there.

I think I'm going crazy... was that tank sitting there when I came over or not?

or maybe I just didn't notice because I was staring at your other tank or the NFL highlights on TV.

Well that certainly makes life a lot more simple!!!
Keep us posted!

Took some pics last night.....

You can really see the difference in the footprints of the 46 gallon bow front compared to the 36"x15"x17" tank. I love the dimensions of the new tank. Its 4" shallower. The stand is taller. And its wider throughout the entire tank not just at the bowed front. Also the current USA PC light fixture is MUCH brighter than the cheap EBAY one on the bow front. The lighting on the current USA orbit fixture is a 96watt 6500k/10000k daylight bulb and a 96watt dual 420nm actinic bulb. I also have a 420nm/460nm actinic bulb which i may use. The dual 420nm is more purple but it makes the corals brighter. I'll decide when I put it on the tank with the corals.

Friday is the big moving day. I am moving from downtown Dallas to Plano 25 miles away. I am going to set up the 40 gallon Friday with some sand and about half the rock from my 46 gallon bow front. Then I am going to let the tank settle for a day and Saturday or Sunday all the coral and my one fish is going in the 40 gallon breeder. I've doen this type of thing before and it usually goes pretty smoothly.

Dave,

Where exactly are you moving to?

I live at 75 and Spring Creek, should be right next to you...

I could house your corals and stuff until you get everything figured out and cycled/stabilized...

I came to pick up the candy cane coral frags, In case you don't remember me... (BTW they are doing awesome!)

That would be awesome! Im moving about a mile west of 75 on Legacy. I remember you. PM me your phone number. I appreciate the offer.

Congrats on the suburbanation Dave. It'll be good to have you out here with us North Dallas folk. The candy cane and mushrooms frags that I got from you are thriving. The green mushrooms are 4" and the red is about 2.5". Congrats again on the baby. What is the due date? As I told you, my wife is pregnant too and our baby girl is due April 1st. Maybe we'll be at the hospital together. Let me know if you need any help and I will see what I can do. If you are not going to use one of the 36" dual Actinic bulbs, I am in need and would buy it from you. Let me know.

Its too bad you dont ride anymore. My buddies and I ride all the time. I ride a 2005 ZX-6RR Green Goblin with punisher skulls.

My baby is due April 24th. Glad to hear the frags are doing great!

I'll be posting soem pics tonight as well as tomorrow. I am going to try and document the move and transfer of tanks. Its going to be challenging with this cold weather. Looks liek most of the buckets are going to ride inside my truck with me with the heater on!

Well everything is transfered. Friday I brought the 40 gal to the house and set it up with new carib live sand and about half my live rock from the 46gal. I used all the base rock and left the rocks with corals attached in the 46. So Today (sunday) I went back to my loft and got the rest of the live rock, corals, and six line. While loadlng my truck I dropped the orbit light fixture and broke one of the 96watt PC bulbs. So I stopped by Aquatic designs in Plano and I bought a new bulb. Aquatic designs is a very nice store and the people there were VERY helpful. Austin recomended that I go there. So I set up the tank and got everything together today. My sixline is doing great. The corals are looking a little rough but that is normal for a move like this. I am sure by tomorrow everything should be back to normal. I need to get rid of some liverock too. And I also broke one of the legs for my light fixture. I have it laying directly on the tank now.
