Damsel hunting

Any ideas other than a tank breakdown to capture an electric blue and yellow tail damsel? They were part of the setup we purchased. The electric blue is digging caves in the sand and creating a mess. [smilie=dull.gif]

I made a trap out of a clear 20oz water bottle with a trap door made from a cd jewel case. I sat on the couch and pulled the string closing the trap door and lifting the apparatus off the bottom of the tank. Only trick was to lure it into the trap. I printed a picture of the same damsel, laminated it with packing tape, and placed it inside. It was so aggressive, it went in to fight another of its own and walla!

Here are some pics. Poke some holes in it so it won't float and let some water escape. You could probably lure it with a chunk of food as well.

Close up of the trap door. I fed the string back thru the bottle to essentially trap it in.

Hope this helps!

Hahaha, you guys are pretty creative! I had the same issue and my damsels would always come to the top of the tank around feeding time. I just dropped in some food and swooped in with the net and got both of them at once.

I am fishing right now....here fishy fishy. He likes to attack my hand so I may sacrifice it. At least he doesn't have shark teeth! The yellow tail is more reclusive so he may be interesting.

Yup I had to buy the smallest hooks possible on eBay, even though I had to buy a pack of 100, it was well worth it. Let me know if u need a couple, I think I should still have them somewhere

I don't exactly have my fishing license, but I may need one of those hooks. Hope he doesn't swallow it, they don't make hook removers that tiny do they? [smilie=lol.gif]

Tweezers...too funny. The sweet little fish (cough) are on their way to petco to be donated. And I have a tank to landscape. At least I didn't have to tear it all out.

By the way Tom, your trap catches a hippo and sail fin tang at the same time. It was extremely funny to see the two of them in the bottle. Didn't close the door on them of course.

When I had to catch my p. fuscus it was easy. He eats from my hand so I grabbed a pinch of food in one hand, the net in the other hand and waited til he came up to snatch some food and scooped him up real quick. He was out before he knew what happened lol.

So did you stuff that Damsel?? [smilie=rofl.gif]

I should have. I actually caught it in about 15 min. I was watching TV with one eye and the tank with the other. I saw that thing go in and jerked that string like I was wahoo fishing in the gulf. That fish went back to the petstore (Pre-dfwmas).

Ahh yes as it appears to the casual observer, but it is a printed duplicate of a domino damsel intended to trick the would be assailant into entering the bottle and defending its own territory. I added that part after the food didn't work!
