Dallas World Aquarium Corals....

Does anyone know how the DWA, The Shed Aquarium, etc. get such large pieces of coral? Do they know 'special' people? Obviously, you can't get pieces this large at your LFS. I've always been curious about how they get such large, beautiful, specimens..... :?:

you can contact tom's. He is a collector so he is able to get large pieces. however usually transportation is the only thing that is very hard.

I'm sure any LFS would be more than happy to order you in anything you wanted... But... Size costs.... Sometimes a LOT...

I know Tranquil Scapes used to have a HUGE leather in one of their display tanks, but I think someone finally made Vincent an offer he couldn't refuse on it...

Yea, it was like $2000. I remember him telling me about it. It was a hell of a lot more than he paid. I can't blame him.

Keep in mind that sometimes you see large corals because they've done a great job and their corals have grown beautifully for a long time, sometimes years.

I agree... :D

If you want a large colony buy a nice sized one and let it grow out. It will adapt to your tank environment better and most likely live longer.

I volunteered at the Aquarium of the Pacific... 75%+ of their corals were either donatios (rare), illegally shipped pieces (most) or pieces that got stuck in customs or something. They had a lot of grow out tanks behind the scenes but because of how they obtained the corals, they couldn't frag or sell pieces. When I left, they were getting full and starting to think about what to do with all the corals in grow-out =/

We were in LA a few weeks ago and got to visit the holding facility for all the illegal goodies that are coming into the State Via LAX. Absolutely incredible. I slobbered all over myself and everyone there. THe fish, and corals were stunning and very illegal too!!!
I had my hands on an Australian Acan colony of 400-500 heads of the most extreme color I have ever seen that had a small hitch hiker that was illegal to import. Shame. I asked if I could chip the small coral off and take the acan for 100.00 and they laughed. I would too but I had to try.

"illegally shipped pieces (most)"

oops, i meant most had the wrong paperwork in customs... not illegal - though a lot still were.

zoa - making any more trips? i'd like to get some more ultra scoly's and other goodies if you wouldn't mind an assistant =)

Dang, do they have coral experts at LAX customs to determine what's legal and what's illegal? That's crazy!

If you are looking for giant clams, I saw two very large (just guessing 15-18" long X 7-9" tall) clams (Gigas) at the Pet-o-rama on Cooper St. near 287 in Mansfield. They looked healthy to my untrained eye, wish I had the tank for them. They were like $299 each. They had a few other larger colonies of coral, but nothing giant.
