Cycling my tank

Guys, I am starting up my first saltwater tank. I have a 10g tank which I am cycling. It has been cycling for over a week now however the ammonia and nitrites are still zero. I have live rocks and live sand in the aquarium. Anybody have an idea how long it takes to cycle.

I'd add some snails and maybe a crab and test it a few days after that. Any time you introduce something new your bioload might not be able to handle it and your tank will spike again. That means your cycle is not done. When your tank is completely cycled you should be able to introduce new stuff in without it spiking unless you over do your bioload.

Post some pics when you get some!

Hi,

I would suggest adding a raw deli shrimp to your tank(no I'm not kidding), wait a few day's and retest for Ammonia etc. As the shrimp starts to decay it will definitedly kick off a mini cycle if your tank has finished cycling or really kick off the cycle in case it hasn't started yet. Take out the shrimp after 3-4 day's. Did you use base rock, uncured LR or cured LR in the tank?? It is possible that your cycly was so small that you missed it however the above will tell you for sure. :)

Cheers,

Thanks guys for your quick responses. No I m not using any base rock. I just have live rock and live sand. I will sure post pictures.

Sorry I mean I have cured LR and live sand from other aquarium. Also I am seeing some algae growing...

I'm not sure I'd add a crab or snail. Those easily die if his cycle hasn't really started yet... raw shrimp, yes.
